Contracting polio at only 18 months old, Kelley Woodfin, RN, DFASHRM, CPHRM, was treated in a hospital and subsequently had to participate in physical therapy for five years. Due to a childhood of being surrounded by nurses and doctors, she knew that she wanted to pursue a similar career path and help others in need. A registered nurse with a proven track record of success in emergency services, including paramedic training and managed care, Ms. Woodfin currently serves as the president and owner of CORE Risk Services, Inc., with which she provides risk management consulting services to health care companies, including loss prevention and control strategies, alternative dispute resolution and risk transfer solutions.
Throughout her career thus far, Ms. Woodfin has honed her expertise in consultation for enterprise risk management processes, compliance program plans and processes, acute care and skilled nursing quality improvement plans, and processes and system assessment. Before establishing CORE Risk Services, she gained valuable experience as the vice president of risk management consulting services for Southern California Presbyterian Homes between 2004 and 2009, and as an outsources corporate risk manager for Aon Risk Consulting Services Inc. Earlier in her career, Ms. Woodfin further flourished as the director of risk management for Universal Care Inc., and CA Health Plans, FHP Inc.
Over the years, Ms. Woodfin also worked as a commissioner for Los Angeles County Commission Services, and as a flight nurse and coordinator for Life Flight California. In a career filled with highlights, she is especially proud of becoming a distinguished fellow with the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management. A certified professional in health care risk management through the American Association for Healthcare Risk Management, Ms. Woodfin earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with honors, from the University of Phoenix in 1995, as well as a diploma in nursing from the University of Southern California’s School of Nursing.
What inspired Ms. Woodfin was her urge and need to help others. Her favorite part of her job is that things occur unexpectedly, which requires thinking quickly; she enjoys problem solving. Her most memorable career moment was when a woman who, at the age of 21, drove off a cliff because she was diagnosed with cancer and felt her life was over; she was in very bad shape and had to undergo surgery, and Ms. Woodfin took care of her. Five years later, the patient saw her told her she had saved her life. The patient overcame cancer, is now married with a child and doing very well.
Ms. Woodfin aligns herself with a number of organizations, including the Utah Association for Healthcare Risk Management, the California Nurses Association, the Southern California Society for Healthcare Risk Management and the Utah Better Business Bureau, in order to remain aware of changes in the field. Devoted to her community, she contributes to those in need as a volunteer emergency responder with the Medical Reserve Corps in Salt Lake City. For her outstanding accomplishments, she was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement of Risk Management Services Award from the Southern California Association. Looking toward the future, Ms. Woodfin intends to experience the continued growth and success of her career. She wants to be remembered for her compassion and intelligence.
