Miriam Levitt

Attributing much of her success to her parents and her upbringing, Miriam Levitt, MD, FAAP, excels as a pediatrician in her private office of Miriam Levitt, MD, and has additionally been the medical director of the Bronxville Union Free School District since 2003. In these roles, she provides medical care to infants, children and adolescents, and supervises policy for public health and infectious disease issues. Since 2007, she has also been a member of the medical executive committee of Montefiore Medical Center, where she previously served as an attending pediatrician in 1975.

Prior to her current work, Dr. Levitt spent over 25 years with Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, New York. First joining the hospital as a member of the medical staff in 1978, she became the director of pediatrics in 1988, a position she held until 2003. Between 2002 and 2006, she served Lawrence Hospital as president of the medical staff and as a member of the board of governors. She began her career in 1973 as an instructor of pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, rising to become an assistant clinical professor in 1976.

In addition to her excellence in medicine, Dr. Levitt is equally devoted to civil service, and feels that her experience with public administration and government processes have enhanced her medical expertise and allowed her to excel in her health policy work. The highlight of her civil service career came when she was elected to serve as the mayor of Scarsdale, New York, from 2011 to 2013. Having immigrated with her family to the United States from Germany in 1948, she felt strongly about giving back to the country where she had been giving the opportunity to find success. Working her way up from being an officer of her neighborhood association, she has also served Scarsdale as a trustee, the fire commissioner and the police commissioner.

Since 2014, Dr. Levitt has been a physician volunteer with the disaster response teams of ServNY and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and served on the national board of governors of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Alumni Association. In 1995, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine recognized her by naming her an honorary founder of the college. An elected fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, where she chaired the school health committee, she also holds membership in the Westchester County Medical Society.

Inspired to her career by her desire fight diseases, Dr. Levitt earned a Bachelor of Arts from New York University in 1967 and a Doctor of Medicine from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in 1971. She completed her internship and residency in pediatrics at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx between 1970 and 1973 and became a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics. Since then, she has received numerous additional certifications through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health and more.
