Nancy Bogen

With her interest in digital imaging coming to her naturally, Nancy Bogen, PhD, most recently served as the artistic director of “The Lark Ascending” in New York from 1997 to 2008. Originally written as a poem by George Meredith, “The Lark Ascending” was later adapted into a famous musical piece by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Dr. Bogen began her professional career as an assistant professor of English at Richmond College, now known as College of Staten Island (CSI), in New York from 1967 to 1976. She then moved up the ranks to full professor from 1976 to 1997.

Prior to the start of her professional career, Dr. Bogen pursued a formal education at New York University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1952. She then matriculated at Columbia University in New York, where she obtained a Master of Arts in 1962 and PhD in 1968, both in English literature. A fellow of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in 1987, Dr. Bogen attributes much of her success to sheer drive.

A prolific writer, Dr. Bogen authored a critical edition of William Blake’s “The Book of Thel” in 1971. Likewise, she wrote three novels, “Klytaimnestra Who Stayed at Home” in 1980, “Bobe Mayse, A Tale of Washington Square” in 1993 and “Bagatelle.Guinevere” in 1995. As a playwright, she scribed “Coeur de Lion, Mon Coeur” in 2000, “Twelve-Tone Blues” and “Lost Morning Eyes” in 2005, and “l’apres midi d’un Schoenberg” in 2010. Additionally, Dr. Bogen contributed two textbooks, “How to Write Poetry” in 1998 and the third edition of “Be a Poet!” in 2007, as well as numerous web shows.

Affiliated with PEN, the Authors Guild and the Dramatists Guild of America, Dr. Bogen was a grantee of Poets & Writers in 1995. Moreover, she was selected for inclusion in the sixth edition of Who’s Who in American Education and several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the East, and Who’s Who in the World. Now in retirement, Dr. Bogen resides in New York with her loving husband of three decades, Arnold Greissle-Shonberg, and is the proud mother of three children. She has been known to enjoy taking photographs in her spare time.
