Driven by an innate desire to give back and make her mother proud, Toshia Huston, RN, BSN, MHA, CCM, has more than two decades of professional experience and counting in the health care industry. As the interim system director of case management at Hemet Global Medical Center, she oversees a caring team of case managers and social workers. Among her responsibilities, she handles proactive discharge planning, making sure that patients can leave the hospital as soon as possible and freeing up bed space for new patients. To achieve this goal, Ms. Huston collaborates with physicians and administrators and oversees transitions for patients requiring additional care or rehabilitation.
Beforehand, Ms. Huston, a certified case manager (CCM), spent invaluable stints as director of case management at Edinburg Regional Medical Center, South Texas Health System Edinburg; regional director of case management with Virginia Premier Health Plan, where she handled case management operations for multiple facilities; director of case management at John Randolph Medical Center; the same title at Barrow Regional Medical Center; and manager of case management at Atlanta Medical Center, in addition to a long string of nursing and other health care roles in California, Arizona, and Georgia. Throughout her professional experience, she has learned the importance of building relationships and considers collaboration to be a key component of her success.
To prepare for her career in health care, Ms. Huston earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 1999 from Georgia State University. After working as a registered nurse (RN), she realized her passion for case management and patient advocacy and decided to secure more education. In 2023, she graduated from the University of Phoenix with a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA), an achievement she considers one of the most significant milestones of her career.
Ms. Huston stays engaged in her community as a volunteer at her local church and maintains membership in the National Society of Leadership and Success. Looking ahead within her industry, she plans to take a more active role in health care reform. Particularly passionate about addressing the lack of resources for managing undocumented immigrant patients after hospitalization, Ms. Huston’s goal is to find sustainable solutions to ensure that these patients receive the care they need while also keeping hospital beds available for those who require them. To aspiring professionals in her field, she offers the following advice: “Don’t give up, stay focused on your goals, and keep trying!”
