Sharolyn Sayers

Sharolyn C. Sayers, PhD, began her professional journey with a deep-rooted passion for law, education and public service that has steadily evolved into a career dedicated to student empowerment and institutional advancement. Over the years, her work has bridged the gap between classrooms, legal offices and administrative departments, allowing her to apply a strategic, student-centered approach to both education and public service. This combination of practical expertise and academic leadership has enabled her to influence programs, policies and initiatives that prepare students for professional success while strengthening the institutions she serves. 

Ms. Sayers holds a Doctor of Philosophy in education from Capella University, where she deepened her understanding of educational theory, leadership and organizational change. She earned a Master of Business Administration in public administration from Concordia University Wisconsin, equipping her with the skills to navigate complex institutional systems and public sector dynamics. Her Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and management, earned magna cum laude from Concordia, reflects her commitment to academic excellence, and her Associate of Science in legal secretarial studies marked the foundation of her professional skill set. 

At Milwaukee Area Technical College, Ms. Sayers made lasting contributions across a variety of roles that touched nearly every aspect of the student experience. As a faculty member in the business division, she taught courses including legal terminology, legal office procedures, business law, Microsoft Office applications, transcription and other subjects essential for preparing students for careers in administrative and legal support. She designed and launched an accelerated evening program tailored for legal and administrative assistants, which expanded educational access for working adults who required flexible schedules.  

Ms. Sayers’ leadership extended well beyond her role in the classroom. She was chair of the office of the technology department, participated in scholarship review processes and played a pivotal role in the launch of the college’s first website. She was instrumental in digitizing operational policies and streamlining the board of directors’ documentation process, which significantly improved efficiency and communication within the institution. She also worked as the coordinator of legal services and an administrative assistant in the office of the general counsel.  

Ms. Sayers’ earlier work as a senior legal secretary with the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s Office played a formative role in her professional and personal outlook. Working within the juvenile division, she provided vital support to attorneys and interacted closely with families navigating challenging legal situations. These encounters gave her a firsthand understanding of the obstacles faced by youth within the justice system and reinforced her belief in education as a tool for empowerment, advocacy and change. This conviction has continued to guide her throughout her career. 

Though not a practicing attorney, Ms. Sayers is recognized for her deep subject matter expertise in both law and business. Her years in legal administration have enabled her to present legal concepts with clarity and real-world relevance, ensuring that students not only learn the theory but also understand its practical application. She is an active member of the National Association of Legal Assistants and remains committed to the professional growth of legal support professionals through ongoing learning and networking opportunities. 

In addition to her professional endeavors, Ms. Sayers has contributed her time and expertise to numerous organizations, including Indian Summer Organization, the National Association for Legal Support Professionals, the International Association of Administrative Professionals and Stitches of Love. These volunteer efforts highlight her dedication to service, collaboration and community connection. Outside of her professional and volunteer commitments, she is working on her autobiography and enjoys pursuits such as writing, gardening, traveling and engaging with the arts. 

Ms. Sayers is widely respected for her ability to encourage others, her thoughtful leadership style and her dedication to helping individuals grow through education. As she looks toward the future, she remains open to returning to the classroom in a part-time capacity, continuing her mission of uplifting students, fostering personal growth and promoting lifelong learning.
