Initially wanting to be a musician, Maureen A. Moon first studied at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. During this period, she was also working as a waitress and bartender at a hotel, and one day a woman who had seen her carrying things all day offered her a free massage, ultimately inspiring Ms. Moon to change directions and join the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee’s massage school. Graduating with honors in 1981, after 1,300 hours of study, she joined the Sheraton Steamboat Hotel in Sheraton Springs, Colorado, where she rose to head massage therapist by 1984. Moving her massage practice to the Denver/Boulder area, she became a subcontractor with the Colorado Athletic Club-Flatirons from 1986 to 2007.
In 2005, Ms. Moon began coursework at the Spinal Reflex Institute, Intl., LLC and went on to achieve her master’s certification in spinal reflex therapy in 2011. Since then, she has flourished with Massage & Spinal Reflex Therapy, where she offers a wide range of massage and other therapies, including craniosacral therapy, sports massage, pregnancy and infant massage, and Swedish, deep tissue and hot-stone massage. In addition to these duties, she has proffered her expertise as an instructor for the Spinal Reflex Institute and the Touch for Health Kinesiology Association. Ms. Moon has also held a number of roles with the American Massage Therapy Association, including past president and director of education for the Colorado chapter.
Ms. Moon attributes much of her success to her emphasis on continued education, noting that she is essentially studying all the time to increase her skills. For her excellence, she has received several honors from the American Massage Therapy Association, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Colorado chapter in 1990, which also awarded her the Meritorious Award in 1991 and 2008 and the Sports Massage Achiever Award in 2006. In 2010, the American Massage Therapy Association presented her with the National President’s Award. When she isn’t working, Ms. Moon continues to cultivate her passion for music as a jazz and blues singer, percussionist and classical guitarist.
