MACRENE RENEE ALEXIADES

Three key characteristics led Dr. Macrene Alexiades to her current career: intellectual excellence, artistic talent passed down by her mother, and integrity.  Although she originally wanted to be an artist and sculptor, she fell in love with science at Harvard University, where she ended up earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1989 and both a PhD and MD in 1997. She believes her artistic background is an asset to her dermatologic endeavors; she is top in her field for achieving a natural and classically beautiful result using injectables.

Currently, Dr. Alexiades serves as the founder and owner of two skin care companies, Dr. Macrene Skin Results and NY Derm LLC. The former has been operational since 2009 and the latter since 2005. She has also been an attending physician at Yale New Haven and West Haven Hospitals since 2006, and an assistant clinical professor at Yale School of Medicine, adjunct clinical professor at Sygros Hospital at the University of Athens, and president and director of dermatology and laser surgery at Macrenee Alexiades-Armenakas, MD, PhD, PC, since 2003. Further, she has worked with Lenox Hill Hospital as an attending physician since 2001. Other positions Dr. Alexiades have held include consultant dermatologist to L’Oreal Paris, admissions interviewer at Harvard Medical School, director of research and laser dermatology at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York, and science advisor to the Archdiocese of North America.

Some of Dr. Alexiades’ most notable achievements include a variety of scientific discoveries, inventions, and patents. She published her findings in professional publications such as the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology and the Biology Review, and used her extensive experience to edit the likes of The Harvard Political Review and The Harvard Crimson. Dr. Alexiades continues to maintain editorial positions with the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, the Journal of Cosmetic Laser Therapy, Lasers in Medicine and Surgery, and Dermatologic Surgery. She is particularly proud of authoring “Cosmetic Dermatology,” a two-volume text that will be published in 2018 and 2019. Dr. Alexiades feels that the book is much needed in the industry, as she has noticed that many patients are being treated with a one-size-fits-all mentality instead of as individuals with unique needs. Another professional highlight was being the only female physician elected to the Board of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. She received the honor in 2017.

To remain abreast of updates in her field, Dr. Alexiades has been part of the faculty of the American Academy of Dermatology since 2008 and has been the director of the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery since 2001. She is also a member of the Hellenic Medical Society, the Women’s Dermatologic Society, the Dermatology Foundation, the Harvard Hellenic Society, and the Massachusetts Medical Society, among others.

When Dr. Alexiades has time away from her field, she enjoys serving her community. She was a volunteer at the St. Francis House Soup Kitchen, a counselor at a rape crisis center in Cambridge, Mass., and a member of the board of directors or both the Cathedral School, Promenade Condon, and the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. Other activities Dr. Alexiades partakes in include sculpting, drawing, painting, photography, tennis, skiing, and yoga.

In recognition of her achievements, Dr. Alexiades has received numerous accolades, including the QVC Beauty Quest Award, the People’s Choice Award from the “New York Post,” the First Place Award from the “Journal of Drugs in Dermatology,” and the Husik Prize. She was also a grantee at the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health, a Paul Dudley White Scholar at Harvard University, and a Fulbright Foundation Scholar at the University of Crete at Heraklion.

Besides her degrees, she is a board certified dermatologist, and credentialed in medicine and surgery from the European Union. Additionally, she is licensed in medicine and surgery in Greece, the States of Connecticut and New York, and a diplomate at the American Board of Dermatology.
