Laura Dabney

Laura Dabney has found much success as a research specialist with the Kootenai County Genealogy Society since 2019, where she also participates on the board of directors and the organization’s strategic subcommittee. In this capacity, she has played a pivotal role in expanding the society’s reach, transforming its research department from a local resource into an operation serving clients across the United States and Europe. Her expertise in historical research, genealogy, client relationship management and bespoke research methodology has positioned her as a trusted authority in her field.

During her tenure with the Kootenai County Genealogy Society, Ms. Dabney has been instrumental in developing innovative outreach strategies, including a systematic restructuring of the membership roster to enhance recruitment for leadership roles. She has assumed increasing responsibility within the aforementioned organization, progressing through successive terms as first-, second- and third-year director before stepping into her current role. As a research specialist, she has conducted foundational investigations for authors working on significant historical projects, such as a comprehensive book chronicling the history of the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department since the 1880s and an extensive study for the 80th anniversary of Echo Beach Resort at Twin Lakes.

A hallmark of Ms. Dabney’s career has been her leadership of the Anderson Family Bible Project alongside Pam Heath. This ambitious initiative explored the Anderson family’s legacy and its connection to Coeur d’Alene’s development, including its ties to the Dream Theatre. The project garnered public attention through a full-page “Fast Five” feature in the Coeur d’Alene Press and presentations at both the Family History Center’s Discovery Day and the Coeur d’Alene Library for the Museum of North Idaho. Ms. Dabney’s ability to transform raw data from census records and deeds into compelling narratives has made her expertise in high demand for major historical undertakings.

Prior to her stellar work in genealogy, Ms. Dabney excelled in education as a structural assistant in a school district’s special education department between 1987 and 2011. In this post, she worked closely with emotionally disturbed middle school students, supporting their academic and personal growth through specialized training and numerous job-enhancement classes focused on emotional disturbances. Her outstanding commitment was recognized when she was honored as Employee of the Month in 2010, reflecting consistent peer acclaim and positive feedback from colleagues and families alike.

Ms. Dabney embarked upon her professional path in the corporate sector at Optical Radiation Corporation’s intraocular lens division in California, initially operating as a customer service representative before advancing to become the director of the employee committee for two years. In these positions, she contributed to workplace culture and employee representation while supporting products related to cataract surgery.

Ms. Dabney’s creative achievements are equally notable. She is an accomplished poet whose work has been published by Poetry International and featured in multiple anthologies preserved within the permanent collections of the Library of Congress—a milestone that underscores her literary talent and international recognition. Ms. Dabney likewise remains active within the North Idaho Photography Club, sharing her passion for visual storytelling inspired by outdoor exploration.

Ms. Dabney’s educational background includes coursework at a community college as well as specialized studies in photography undertaken after relocating to Northern Idaho in 2011. She has further obtained various certificates of completion through collegiate workshops and job enhancement courses that have supported her work in special education and beyond. Her meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication have been central to her professional success; she consistently delivers exhaustive effort on every project while directing all research fees back into her organization to fund library expansion and resource acquisition.

Beyond her professional commitments, Ms. Dabney is civically engaged with organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Susan G. Komen, Tunnel to Towers Foundation and Special Olympics Idaho. Her personal life has been enriched by time spent with her daughter, hiking, boating and exploring local landscapes—pursuits that reflect both her creative spirit and deep appreciation for nature.
