Joan Elizabeth Moore, JD, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, is a distinguished professional in human resources and legal compliance, dedicating more than four decades to her role as the president and owner of The Arbor Consulting Group, Inc. Since founding the company in 1983, she has prioritized employee satisfaction and empowerment, fostering an environment where employees feel valued and respected. Her leadership has contributed to long-term employee retention and a culture of collaboration and individual growth. Ms. Moose is proud to excel in her leadership of this national human resources consulting firm specializing in human resource risk management and OFCCP compliance.

Before establishing The Arbor Consulting Group Inc., Ms. Moore served as a consultant at James Lash & Co. from 1980 to 1983. She began her career at Ford Motor Co., where she worked as a personnel executive from 1976 to 1980. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated her expertise in working with federal contractors to ensure compliance with federal affirmative action regulations, earning recognition as a leader in her field.

Ms. Moore has contributed significantly to the human resources industry through various leadership positions. She served as president of the Human Resources Association of Greater Detroit in 1996 and held the same role for a local chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management. As a member of the American Bar Association and the Ohio Bar Association, she has served on the National Hearing Committee with the Society for Human Resource Management for more than 10 years. Ms. Moore is also an alumna of Leadership Detroit.

In preparation for her professional path, Ms. Moore established a strong academic foundation, earning a Bachelor of Science in multidisciplinary social science from Michigan State University in 1973, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Case Western Reserve University in 1976. She was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1977 and holds certifications as a senior professional in human resources and a SHRM senior certified professional.

Ms. Moore has dedicated her time to serving on various boards, including the American Cancer Society and the Children’s Aid Society. She was vice president of the board of directors for the Private Industry Council in Wayne County, Michigan, from 1985 to 1987. She has also contributed to the field through her work on the “2017 HR Certification Institute Guide to the Human Resource Body of Knowledge.”

Reflecting on her path, Ms. Moore considers the longevity and resilience of her business to be her greatest professional achievement. One of her proudest moments came during the COVID-19 pandemic when, despite significant challenges, she maintained full operations without laying off any employees. Additionally, she believes ensuring that everyone continued to receive their full salary was a testament to her leadership and unwavering commitment.

In light of her impressive undertakings, Ms. Moore received the Best of MichBusiness Award from the Michigan Business and Professional Association in 2015 and was named one of Crain’s Detroit Business’ 100 Most Influential Women. She attributes her success to her unique capabilities and the network she has cultivated both internally and externally. Ms. Moore values collaboration and emphasizes the importance of creating a strong sense of community within the workplace, as building connections and fostering collaboration are key aspects of her leadership philosophy.

Outside of her professional responsibilities, Ms. Moore cherishes time spent with her daughter and enjoys supporting wearable artists, particularly those in the jewelry and textiles industries. She is also passionate about traveling and exploring new cultures. Looking to the future, she is focused on maintaining the momentum she has built over her extensive career by continuing to grow her consulting group while identifying and developing a successor to ensure its long-term success. Despite receiving offers from other companies, Ms. Moore remains committed to preserving the unique culture she has fostered within her organization, cultivating internal talent, and enhancing employee experiences.
