A self-employed business owner for numerous years, Janis L. Comstock-Jones has found success as a consultant, through which she oversees various projects for clients including homeland security, records management, information technology and contingency planning. Based in Mount Vernon, Ohio, she has worked as an independent entrepreneur since 1992. Gaining inimitable expertise as a data processing coordinator, assistant director and director of information technology as a former employee of the American Red Cross, Ms. Comstock-Jones contributed the nonprofit’s efforts between 1987 and 1995, and concurrently held the role of a national instructor between 1990 and 1995. Additionally, she taught various courses at Columbus Technical Institute and was a fiscal officer for the county government of Columbus, Ohio, during her career.
Ms. Comstock-Jones became involved in her profession because she wanted to know everything about everything. She had a great sense of curiosity and one of the things she always wanted to do was instruct adults. She looked for a position that allowed her to do that and also allowed her to use all the areas she had expertise in. Ms. Comstock-Jones also wanted the opportunity to keep learning and valued being an educator especially for women. She remembered getting into fields that were not for women, which made it more challenging.
A leader in numerous civic and community initiatives, Ms. Comstock-Jones is a former fundraising chairperson of the United Way of Columbus from 1990 until 1991. Likewise, she is a former director of the National Standardbred-Pleasure Horse Organization, having served between 1989 and 2003. Ms. Comstock-Jones has been active as the president of the Central Ohio Driving Association in Mount Vernon since 1992.
Ms. Comstock-Jones attended the University of Rio Grande in Ohio, where she received a Bachelor of Science in 1978. She subsequently completed postgraduate coursework at Ohio University and the Columbus Technical Institute before acquiring a Master of Science in criminal justice at Tiffin University in Ohio in 2007. Further, Ms. Comstock-Jones is IBM certified.
To remain aware of developments in her field, Ms. Comstock-Jones is a member of the International Association of Emergency Managers. Meanwhile, some of her avocational memberships include the Ohio Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association, the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association and the U.S. Trotting Association. Named Employee of the Year by the Arc in Columbus, Ms. Comstock-Jones is also a celebrated Marquis listee. She has been included in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the Midwest.
