Annette S. Slater, MD, has built a career in psychiatry defined by service, innovation and a deep commitment to the well-being of others. Her professional journey began with a formative period as a captain in the U.S. Army, where she cultivated the leadership skills and sense of duty that would guide her throughout her life. This early experience in a structured and service-oriented environment helped shape her approach to mental health care and reinforced her dedication to making a lasting difference in the lives of individuals and communities.

Dr. Slater earned her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Arkansas, an education that laid a solid foundation for her work in psychiatry. She attributes much of her professional success to a consistent approach to daily responsibilities and a steadfast commitment to excellence. Over the years, she has applied this philosophy across various settings, from federal institutions to local community clinics, always keeping patient care and mental health advocacy at the forefront of her efforts.

Following her military service, Dr. Slater began an extensive tenure with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). During this time, she focused on developing and expanding programs that directly addressed the unique needs of veterans. One of her most impactful contributions involved establishing community-based outpatient clinics, which made mental health services more accessible to underserved populations. She also was vital to the expansion of cognitive behavioral therapy programs designed to assist with sleep management, a common challenge among veterans. These initiatives significantly improved the quality of care and were recognized with the Robert Woods Shannon Award.

After her work with the VA, Dr. Slater continued her service in the field by joining the Greater Little Rock Community Mental Health Clinic. There, she provided direct care and expert guidance in the treatment of various psychiatric conditions. Her work at the clinic further cemented her reputation as a skilled and compassionate psychiatrist dedicated to improving mental health outcomes.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Slater has remained actively involved in several professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association, the Arkansas Medical Dental and Pharmaceutical Association and the National Medical Association. These affiliations have enabled her to collaborate with peers across the country and contribute to ongoing developments in psychiatric care and medical leadership.

Beyond medicine, Dr. Slater has devoted considerable time to community service. She has been an engaged member of The Links Incorporated for more than two decades, including three years as chapter president. In this role, she led initiatives focused on chronic disease education, grant writing for health screening programs and community wellness campaigns. Under her leadership, the organization promoted efforts such as community gardening and kidney disease awareness, reflecting her broader commitment to public health.

As she looks to the future, Dr. Slater remains focused on service through community and historical preservation. One of her primary goals is to document the legacy of her chapter of The Links Incorporated in Little Rock, Arkansas. She plans to author a book that honors the founding members and celebrates their enduring impact. In doing so, Dr. Slater hopes to inspire future generations and preserve the stories of women who have given so much to their communities.
