Stacey Melendez, MPM, MBA

Currently serving as a senior project leader at Parexel International (MA) Corporation since 2024, Stacey Melendez, MPM, MBA, has established herself as a distinguished leader in clinical research who is lauded for her creative thinking and solution-oriented approach. In her capacity as senior project leader, she oversees global clinical trials in oncology, obesity and other therapeutic areas, managing projects from small studies to large phase three trials. Ms. Melendez’s responsibilities include tracking functional leads throughout a project’s life cycle, coordinating with vendors, ensuring adherence to timelines and budgets, and facilitating communication between clinical research associates and sponsors. She is also tasked with reviewing invoices and budgets, collaborating with contract teams and assuring patient enrollment and visit scheduling are executed according to protocol.

Before her current role, Ms. Melendez was a global senior clinical project manager at Ipsen for several years, during which time she honed her expertise in managing complex international studies. From 2019 to 2022, she served as a global study associate director for cardiovascular, renal and metabolic (CVRM) diseases at AstraZeneca, where she played a pivotal role in advancing clinical research initiatives that contributed to significant improvements in patient quality of life. Earlier in Ms. Melendez’s time at AstraZeneca, she took on the position of project coordinator for CVRM and oncology. Her career began at AstraZeneca and MedImmune in 2007 as an administrative assistant and contractor. These formative years provided her with foundational experience in the pharmaceutical industry, allowing her to develop a comprehensive understanding of clinical operations.

Before venturing onto her vocational path, Ms. Melendez pursued a strong academic foundation. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in parks, recreation and leisure studies with a concentration in therapeutic recreation and a minor in psychology from Frostburg State University in 2003. Subsequently, Ms. Melendez earned a Master of Business Administration and a master’s degree in public management from the University of Maryland Global Campus in 2010. She has further enhanced her qualifications through several certifications: national recreation and parks accreditation from the National Recreation and Park Association; clinical trials project management through Montgomery College; and the LEAP leadership acceleration program through AstraZeneca.

To commemorate her accomplishments, Ms. Melendez has been recognized with a number of prestigious honors, underscoring her leadership and impact. Most notably, she received the Director’s Award for Mentoring and Coaching and the Director’s Award for Resolving Challenges on Clinical Trials, both during her lengthy tenure with AstraZeneca. Ms. Melendez credits her success to strong mentors and colleagues who guided her development as she became an expert in oncology, cardiovascular research and obesity studies. She believes that improving patients’ quality of life is among the most meaningful contributions one can make in this field and recognizes the importance of networking, continuous learning and maintaining an open mind.

Beyond her professional commitments, Ms. Melendez is a loving wife and mother to two sons. She volunteers at her sons’ school, reflecting her dedication to civic engagement and community service, and also enjoys making shirts with Cricut and spending time with her family outside of work.

Looking ahead, Ms. Melendez aspires to return to line management with the goal of helping others grow in their careers. She aims to advance to a director role, allowing her to oversee all aspects of project management. Ms. Melendez’s ambitions are marked by the same unwavering dedication to exceptional leadership that has defined her entire professional life. Her commitment to lifelong learning and improving patient outcomes will continue to define her legacy within the field of clinical research.
