Sherry Frankel’s stellar career in retail has been defined by her longstanding role as the owner of Sherry Frankel’s Melangerie, a boutique she established in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1994. For more than three decades, she has cultivated an environment that prioritizes personal service and genuine connection, cementing her among her peers and customers as an expert in making people smile. Her shop is widely regarded as her most notable achievement, having brought joy to countless individuals and fostering memorable experiences for her clientele. The boutique’s success and unique atmosphere have been celebrated in the published feature “A Heritage of Retail: Sherry Frankel’s Melangerie.” Mrs. Frankel’s commitment to laughter and positivity is a hallmark of her approach, with many remarking on her vibrant personality and theatrical flair.
Before launching her own boutique, Mrs. Frankel found success as the manager of Marion Cummings’ Melangerie for approximately 15 years, beginning in the late 1970s. This period was instrumental in shaping her business philosophy and honing her skills in customer engagement and boutique management. Her transition to ownership came when Marion Cummings retired, presenting Mrs. Frankel with the opportunity to continue the legacy of the Melangerie name under her own stewardship.
After relocating to Florida earlier in her career, Mrs. Frankel initially assisted with her husband’s art gallery, where she specialized in wholesaling and featured works by renowned artist Peter Max. Prior to this, she worked at Courage, a boutique where she developed a passion for retail inspired by childhood memories of playing store. Mrs. Frankel was also active in the advertising department at H. Goodman & Sons for two years.
Mrs. Frankel’s professional journey began with a deep immersion in the music industry alongside Carole Bayer Sager during their junior high school years. Their collaboration led to songwriting achievements such as winning the Murray the K Contest and performing together at Mrs. Frankel’s wedding in 1965. Ultimately, she chose to prioritize family life over a touring music career, marking a pivotal decision that redirected her path toward business and retail.
To support her professional ambitions, Mrs. Frankel pursued an education at Endicott Junior College in Beverly, Massachusetts, from which she graduated with an associate degree in television and radio in 1963. The communication skills developed through this program have contributed significantly to her ability to connect with customers and create engaging experiences within her boutique. Mrs. Frankel attributes much of her motivation and ongoing success to Dash, her poodle, who remains a constant source of inspiration.
In addition to her business pursuits, Mrs. Frankel has maintained herinvolvement with civic organizations on Worth Avenue for over three decades. She has served on the board of directors of the Worth Avenue Association since 1993, having previously held the position of president and secretary. Her support further extends to community events such as the Halloween Costume Contest and the Pet Contest on Worth Avenue.
For more than 30 years, Mrs. Frankel has excelled as mistress of ceremonies for the annual Worth Avenue Pet Contest, an event that draws participants from across the country and underscores Palm Beach’s reputation as a pet-friendly destination. Her leadership has helped establish this contest as a cherished tradition on the island.
Throughout her career, Mrs. Frankel has embodied values instilled by her parents — generosity and kindness — dedicating herself to spreading happiness through every interaction. This guiding principle has not only shaped her professional achievements but also brought fulfillment and joy into her own life as she continues to make others smile each day. Recognition for Mrs. Frankel’s contributions includes receiving the Spirit of the Avenue Award in 1996 and the One and Only Worth Avenue Award from the Worth Avenue Association in 2004.
Mrs. Frankel encourages those entering the retail industry to adopt a customer-centric perspective, emphasizing empathy and understanding individual needs over personal preferences or price considerations. She believes that true value lies in creating meaningful experiences rather than focusing solely on monetary aspects. Looking ahead, Mrs. Frankel intends to continue pursuing her current endeavors with enthusiasm.
