The daughter of a World War II surgeon father and nurse mother, Nancy L. Schatken admired her father and enjoyed the stories he shared about his work. While living in New York, she was hired to set up medical meetings for pharmaceutical companies to advertise their products to healthcare professionals in 10 cities across the United States. Ms. Schatken was responsible for organizational duties like hotel bookings, travel and venue location. She considers herself a curious person, and attributes the drive she has used to progress throughout her career to that curiosity.
Since 1998, Ms. Schatken has served as owner and founder of Mostly Medical, Inc., in Hallandale, Florida, previously serving in the same roles at its New York and St. James, Barbados, locations from 1970 to 1978 and 1978 to 1998, respectively. In this post, she specializes in work from authors whose first language is not English. Ms. Schatken began her professional career as a medical technologist at various medical institutions in 1960, remaining in this position for six years before becoming acting managing editor of medical journals for Harper & Row in New York from 1966 to 1969. She then served as associate editor of Medical World News, published by McGraw-Hill, from 1969 to 1970.
Prior to the start of her professional career, Ms. Schatken matriculated at the School of Arts and Science of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in medical technology in 1959. In addition, she became a certified medical technologist (MT-ASCP) through Albany Medical College in New York the following year. An Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Ms. Schatken is also listed to the World Who’s Who of Women.
Ms. Schatken’s biggest mentor was Dr. William Dameshek, a world-renowned hematologist who she considers herself lucky to have had the chance to work under and learn so much from about the science of hematology. Today, she resides in Florida and has been known to enjoy travel, reading, swimming and entertaining in her spare time.
