Accruing 46 years of experience in her field to her credit, Nevada N. Brewer began her professional career as a teacher of adult education in Towson, Maryland, in 1977, remaining in this position for seven years before coordinating the Just Say No to Drugs Program within Baltimore City Public Schools from 1986 to 1988. She later taught within Baltimore City Public Schools from 2000 to 2001, also managing its summer school from 2000 to 2002, and then moved up the ranks to the roles of academic coach of mathematics and science from 2002 to 2003 and coordinator of the mathematics elementary laboratory from 2003 to 2004. During this time, she also coordinated the Discipline Center from 2001 to 2002. Later on, Ms. Brewer was a teacher supervisor of the Department of Juvenile Services at the Pratt School of Sheppard Pratt Health System in 2004 and a special education coordinator of the same department at Charles H. Hickey Jr. School from 2007 to 2012. She currently serves the school as teacher supervisor since 2012, as well as formerly at Towson University, the University of Notre Dame and Coppin State University from 1989 to 2003, among others.
In addition to this tenure, in 1980, Ms. Brewer participated in the Project Future Search Phone-a-Thon to recruit minority students at the University of Maryland, College Park and coordinated the Heads Up Program. She also coordinated the Echo Hill Outdoor School from 1988 to 2003, participated in Baltimore City Public School Systems’ Write to Learn Program from 1990 to 1991 and was a leadership teacher for the STARS Science Program in 1995, among many others. More recently, Ms. Brewer served on the advisory board for the Echo Hill Outdoor School from 2003 to 2004 and was a teacher supervisor with the Maryland State Department of Education from 2004 to 2012. She further served as the special education coordinator at the William Donald Schaefer House under the Department of Juvenile Services, and was supervisor for the Math-a-Thon program for St. Jude Research Center from 1993 to 2003 and coordinator of the 24 Challenge Mathematics Tournament from 1996 to 2003. She enjoys working with children because she sees progress with them from September to June.
Prior to the start of her professional career, Ms. Brewer pursued a formal education at Coppin State University in Baltimore, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1973 and two Master of Education degrees in correctional education in 1974 and special education in 1981, respectively. Following her graduation from the school, she completed postgraduate coursework at the Community College of Baltimore County in 1985. Several years later, she returned to Coppin State to complete additional postgraduate coursework between 2006 and 2007. Furthermore, Ms. Brewer is a certified elementary and special education teacher.
In light of her exceptional work in her field, Ms. Brewer was given the Freedom Foundation Award in 1974, and was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by Iota Phi Lambda in 1993 and Teacher of the Year in 1994. Moreover, she was selected for inclusion in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World. Moving forward, Ms. Brewer hopes she will be able to continue serving the population she is presently serving. She has been known to enjoy the arts and decorating in her spare time.
