Recognized for her skill in private equity, capital markets, and hedge funds, Mary Harmon is thriving in her position as a managing director at Goldman Sachs. She has held the position since 1999, and is driven by her desire to tackle issues and obtain the best possible outcomes. Some of her responsibilities as a manager include finding ways to motivate her team to have the same visibility and accountability she possesses and serving as a tax counsel for the financial giant. Her blend of financial and legal knowledge has been invaluable.
Ms. Harmon initially became involved in her profession on the advice of a professor, who recommended she supplement her CPA certification with an LLM. She dropped and sold everything to move to New York and make her new dream a reality. She only intended to stay for nine months while she garnered experience, but ended up loving her work so much that she stayed. Ms. Harmon furthered her education with a JD from the University of Arkansas in 1984. She also joined prominent professional organizations like ABA and the Federal Bar Association.
Looking to the future, Ms. Harmon hopes to be remembered as a thoughtful and knowledgeable tax attorney who was approachable and really cared about her team’s progress. She is already starting to leave her mark; in 1993, she was honored as the recipient of the Chief Counsel Award for Service as Special Counsel by the Chief Counsel of the IRS.
