Lorraine Peoples is a retired elementary school educator with more than 55 years of specialization in reading instruction. She attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, earning a Bachelor of Science in elementary education in 1962 and a Master of Science in education, curriculum and instructional design in 1967. Ms. Peoples completed further postgraduate coursework at Drake University in 1978.
Ms. Peoples initially served as a primary teacher at Glick Elementary in Marshalltown, Iowa, from 1962 until 1963, and at Grant Elementary in Des Moines between 1963 and 1965. She joined Fisher Elementary School in Marshalltown as a primary grades teacher from 1965 to 1978 and excelled as the interim principal for the 1978 academic year. From 1978 until 1988, she maintained activity as an elementary teacher at Phoenix Country Day School in Paradise Valley, Arizona, during which she rose to become the acting head of the lower school in 1985. Ms. Peoples continued her career as an elementary program director at the Tesseract School in Paradise Valley between 1988 and 1991, and a second grade teacher at the school from 1988 until her retirement from teaching in 1996.
Since 1996, Ms. Peoples has distinguished herself as a reading consultant and speaker. In 1998, she established GLoBooks Publishing, LLC, a company that focused on reading instruction curriculum and early literacy intervention. She is the author of “You Can Teach Someone to Read, A How-To Book for Friends, Parents and Teachers: Step-by-Step Directions to Provide Any Reader the Necessary Tools to Easily Teach Someone to Read,” published in 2000, with a second edition that arrived in 2011. Ms. Peoples is proud to have led more than 150 literacy instruction workshops across the United States and her materials have been used to teach English language reading skills globally. She is a lifetime member of the National Education Association and the Association of Publishers for Special Sales. Additionally, the Lorraine Peoples Science Center at the Tesseract School in Paradise Valley is named in her honor.
Currently, Ms. Peoples has been volunteer teaching since 2020. Her daughter, Cathryn Hill, also works weekends in the medical field.
