
Leigh Harter, CFP®, ChFC has built a career defined by a deep commitment to helping business owners navigate the complexities of succession planning. As managing director at NFP, an Aon company, she guides clients through the critical process of business continuation, offering strategic support in the review of sales and cross-purchase agreements. Her work focuses on designing comprehensive plans that allow partners to fund insurance needs, build capital and execute seamless buyouts in the event of a partner’s passing. Her role also extends to supporting entrepreneurs and collaborating with family offices, ensuring that both businesses and families are prepared for the future.
Ms. Harter earned a Bachelor of Commerce in business administration and economics, graduating cum laude from DePaul University. Her studies at Saint Louis University Madrid Campus and the University of Wisconsin expanded her international perspective and strengthened her understanding of economic theory and business strategy. She holds several professional certifications, including chartered financial consultant from The American College of Financial Services and certified financial planner from the CFP Board. These academic and professional credentials form the foundation of her expertise in estate, insurance and succession planning.
Before joining NFP, Ms. Harter was a managing director at Pinnacle Financial Group, refining her skills in financial planning, risk assessment and client engagement. Prior to that position, she led initiatives at The Insurance Design Center LLC, developing custom insurance models tailored to client needs. Her tenure as executive vice president at Goldstein Financial Group LLC was instrumental in shaping her ability to guide clients through complex wealth management scenarios. She also gained valuable experience in her earlier positions as case design manager at The Orchard Group and case designer at J R Katz, where she handled intricate planning cases and financial illustrations.
Ms. Harter’s foundational years were spent as a financial analyst with Harvey M. King and Associates and The Ayco Corporation. These early roles instilled in her a strong analytical framework and a practical understanding of financial systems. Her initial experience as a probate administrative assistant at The Harris Bank introduced her to estate planning and client services, setting the stage for her long-term success in the financial services industry.
In addition to her professional work, Ms. Harter is deeply engaged in civic and charitable activities. She serves as a Legacy Advisor for Lurie Children’s Hospital and is actively involved with PAWS Chicago. Her community service also includes contributions to the Hunger Resource Network and Scouting America. Her passion for public service is matched by her advocacy for holistic estate planning, a subject on which she has published nine articles. She regularly speaks to professional and community audiences about the critical role of life insurance in comprehensive planning.
Outside of her career, Ms. Harter leads an active and fulfilling life. She participates in triathlons and enjoys skiing, swimming, biking, hiking, yoga and boxing. Her interests also include cooking, baking, home brewing and exploring personal finance. A dedicated mother of two sons who both achieved Eagle Scout honors, she finds joy in spending time with her granddaughter. She remains committed to empowering women and encouraging civic leadership across generations.
