Beyond her primary responsibilities, Ms. Cook is an accomplished author recognized for both creative fiction and scholarly contributions. Writing under the pen name K.M. Cookie, she published “Song of Hummingbird Highway” with Koehler Books in 2026. The novel is set partly in Los Angeles, Michigan and Belize— locations that reflect chapters of Ms. Cook’s own life— and explores themes of art, truth and connection along Belize’s scenic Hummingbird Highway. Her bibliography also includes co-authoring “Career Pathway Strategies That Reduce Barriers for Nontraditional Nursing Students,” published by Creative Nursing in 2024 as well as penning additional articles for Creative Nursing and Career Education Review.

“Song of Hummingbird Highway” draws upon cultural lessons learned during Ms. Cook’s time in Belize among friends and family who welcomed her into their community. In addition to its literary narrative, the book is distinguished by its integration of art and music: each chapter opens with a curated black-and-white photograph and features a song chosen for each scene instead of traditional section breaks. She is currently recording an audiobook version featuring a multicultural cast of actors voicing the novel’s diverse characters while collaborating on a Portuguese translation project in Brazil alongside her partner.

Ms. Cook’s literary accomplishments have garnered multiple accolades in 2026, including the Five Star Award for Readers’ Favorite and the Fiction Cultural Bronze Medal for Readers’ Favorite. Her efforts have been celebrated with the Innovation Award from West Coast University, Above and Beyond Award in addition to various employee awards. Born in Pennsylvania but raised in Michigan, Ms. Cook’s early experiences shaped both her worldview and creative pursuits.

Looking toward the future, Ms. Cook plans to continue writing while developing an audiobook adaptation that incorporates original songs into its production. She is updating her goal sheet with aspirations to share journeys from pain to empowerment to audiences worldwide through literary magical realism that bridges cultures utilizing words, art and music.
