Hilda Mejia Abreu, MS, PhD, has long been recognized as a guiding force in higher education, shaping student experiences through her leadership. As associate dean of admissions, student life, and inclusivity at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, she leads initiatives that influence every stage of the student journey. She oversees the selection of medical students, collaborates with faculty, staff, and alumni, and ensures that each incoming class is welcomed into an environment built on support and opportunity.  

Dr. Mejia Abreu’s academic background forms a solid foundation for the impact she has made throughout her career. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy in higher education administration from Michigan State University, sharpening her understanding of the complexities that shape enrollment management and student development. She also completed a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in social sciences at the University of Massachusetts. 

In addition to her leadership at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Mejia Abreu is the assistant dean of admissions, scholarships, diversity, and inclusion at Michigan State University. Her portfolio includes managing scholarship programs, promoting equitable admissions practices, and fostering a sense of belonging among both students and colleagues. She is known for her ability to mentor and uplift others, ensuring that individuals feel supported as they navigate the challenges of higher education. One of her most significant accomplishments is securing state and federal grant funding at both Michigan State University and the University of Texas. This has enabled her to direct vital resources toward underserved students who benefit profoundly from additional support. 

Before returning to Michigan State University, Dr. Mejia Abreu worked as executive director of program partnerships at Liaison International in Watertown, Massachusetts. There, she built strategic alliances with universities and organizations across the country, helping institutions strengthen their recruitment and enrollment processes. Her work broadened her understanding of national trends in higher education and expanded her ability to support students from varied academic and cultural backgrounds. 

Earlier in her career, Dr. Mejia Abreu worked as the associate dean of admissions and student services at The University of Texas at San Antonio. During this period, she guided initiatives focused on student support and community engagement, fostering a learning environment that encouraged personal growth and academic achievement. Prior to that role, she held a long-term position as assistant dean of admissions and student services at Michigan State University, where she played an integral part in designing admissions strategies and advancing student development programs.  

Dr. Mejia Abreu remains engaged in national conversations shaping higher education. She participates actively in several professional organizations, including the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions, NASPA Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, the Association of Collegiate Educators, and NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising. Her involvement reflects her dedication to ongoing learning and her desire to contribute to the advancement of her field. 

Dr. Mejia Abreu’s commitment to service extends to the community. She volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and serves as co-chair for the Council of Diversity Teams at Michigan State University. Looking ahead, she aspires to serve as a dean of students at a comprehensive university. She seeks to expand her impact by shaping programs that cultivate leadership, promote academic success, and empower students to navigate their futures with confidence.
