Validated by more than four decades of professional prowess, Esther E. Douglas is an award-winning registered nurse who has shared her wealth of knowledge across the globe. Initially becoming involved in the field of medicine due to her family’s influence on the medical industry, Ms. Douglas sought to pursue a career specifically in nursing. Ultimately, she intended to spread her expertise in the medical industry to other countries worldwide and has established herself as a renowned specialist in the United Kingdom and the United States.
To prepare for her pronounced career, Ms. Douglas pursued a formal education at the University of Dundee in Scotland, receiving a diploma in orthopedic nursing from its School of Nursing and Midwifery. After immigrating to the United States, she received a Master of Science in Nursing in public health from Madison University. Impressively, Ms. Douglas is a registered nurse in the United States and the United Kingdom, is certified as a legal nurse consultant, and is licensed in gerontology.
While excelling as a nurse in the United States, Ms. Douglas was also afforded opportunities to travel for approximately 28 years. In this regard, she worked as a traveling registered nurse in Africa for three years and in Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea for a year. During this time, she prioritized urgent care cases and maintained responsibility for making patient rounds, conducting assessments and physical examinations, and taking care of medication management and charting. Spending 40 years and counting in nursing, Ms. Douglas always enjoyed traveling to different countries and becoming acquainted with patients from all walks of life. She emphasizes that she was never motivated by financial gain. Instead, she was prompted to succeed by her ambition to help and serve others. For her commitment to her profession, she was honored with the Knights Kings Cross Award in 2005.
For her success, Ms. Douglas credits her naturally humble nature, which has allowed her to remain grounded and take her career in stride. Throughout her career, she has learned to love her work to excel and maintain a stable sense of integrity as well as treat her patients and their families with the utmost respect. Her patients often compliment her endearing, warm personality and her heart for relating to patients in a simple, respectful manner while concurrently providing long-term care and extensive support. Ms. Douglas says that sitting down with patients and their families was imperative to their recovery, noting that she always explained recovery procedures before releasing her patients from the hospital.
Ms. Douglas would like to be remembered as an individual who was always thirsty for newfound knowledge in the medical profession and for her outstanding attention to detail. To wit, she has always harnessed her love of learning, retaining information from colleagues, peers, and professors accordingly. She also notes that simplicity may sometimes be the best way to govern complications. When asked for advice she would give emerging professionals in the nursing industry, Ms. Douglas states that it is significant to remain humble, as knowledge is limitless. Moreover, she stresses the importance of escalating in rank in her field, particularly as women and leaders. She also believes in and enjoys giving back to her community by volunteering with The Salvation Army in Atlanta, Georgia, and being an active member of Knights of the Rose.
As she looks to the future, Ms. Douglas endeavors to travel back to the United Kingdom to visit family members and begin working on improving her house, all while maintaining her peace of mind and sense of honor. In addition, she and her husband recently purchased a small hospital in North Dakota, which they intend to renovate, redesign, and transform into a private residence.
