EMILY M. WESTPHAL

Emily Westphal

Emily M. Westphal has built a career as an orchestra teacher at Williston Middle School Central Campus, transforming a newly established program into a thriving ensemble of more than 100 students. Her leadership and commitment have been central to the program’s growth, and she considers this expansion one of her most meaningful professional achievements. She teaches grades six through eight, tailoring lessons to meet diverse learning needs while managing a full schedule of rehearsals, performances and administrative responsibilities. Beyond instruction, she oversees tasks such as selecting music, reserving performance spaces, coordinating logistics for outside rentals and finalizing contracts, ensuring that both students and audiences enjoy well-prepared concerts.

Ms. Westphal’s academic background has been fundamental to her success as an educator. She earned a Master of Science in curriculum and instruction from Western Governors University, an accomplishment that provided her with advanced teaching strategies to strengthen her classroom practice. She also completed a Bachelor of Music in music education from Concordia College, where she gained hands-on experience and a solid foundation in both performance and pedagogy. Earlier, she graduated from high school in Grand Forks, a milestone that set the stage for her decision to dedicate her life to music and teaching.

In addition to Ms. Westphal’s work at Williston Middle School Central Campus, she has offered private music lessons, helping students of different ages and abilities refine their skills and deepen their appreciation for orchestra. Her professional growth is also reflected in her active membership in the American String Teachers Association. This involvement keeps her connected with the broader music education community and allows her to exchange ideas, adopt innovative methods and continue learning from colleagues across the country.

The encouragement Ms. Westphal received from her own high school and college orchestra teachers played a defining role in her decision to pursue this path. Mentors such as Jeff Seabloom, Jane Linde Capistran, Jennifer Boettger and Nicole Rumppe inspired her to combine a passion for performance with a calling to teach. She credits her progress to determination, hard work and the support of mentors and peers who believed in her potential.

Ms. Westphal’s dedication to advancing music education extends beyond the classroom. As a western representative on the North Dakota Music Education Board, she contributes to regional initiatives that promote the arts and expand access to music programs. This service reflects her belief in the importance of community involvement and the value of ensuring that students everywhere have the opportunity to learn through music.

Born in Grand Forks, Ms. Westphal balances her professional life with personal pursuits that bring joy and fulfillment. She enjoys cooking, baking, exercising and walking her dog. Time spent reading, watching television and sharing experiences with her husband, Anthony Westphal, adds to the balance she seeks between her career and her personal life.

Looking ahead, Ms. Westphal hopes to see her orchestra program continue to grow and recognizes the importance of expanding staff to support its development. She envisions creating opportunities such as a youth orchestra that would further connect students with the wider community. With a focus on sustaining student engagement and strengthening music education, she remains dedicated to helping both her school and community embrace the value of music.
