Rev. Dn. Ellen L. Ekstrom is a dedicated small business owner, publisher, and author whose career reflects a lifelong passion for writing, history, and service. As the proprietor of Whyte Rose & Violet, Scribes, she has managed the publication and release of her works since establishing the firm in 2013. Her decision to open her own publishing business arose from a desire for creative independence, allowing her full control over editing, marketing, and cover design. Rev. Ekstrom’s writing often draws upon her expertise in medieval and church history, blending her deep understanding of ethics and religion with storytelling.
Rev. Ekstrom’s academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Theological Studies with a concentration in Christian mythos and a subspecialty in Christian ethics from the Episcopal School for Deacons. Her education shaped her perspective on faith and ethics, informing her ministry and her literary endeavors. Her theological background is evident in her books, which explore complex spirituality, morality, and human resilience themes. Rev. Ekstrom’s professional journey began in the legal field, where she worked as a legal secretary at local law firms for over four decades. Her legal career provided her with opportunities to support individuals facing challenging circumstances, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping others. Beyond her legal work, she served as a choir director at a Catholic church, an experience that deepened her connection to music and worship. Encouraged by those around her, she transitioned to the Episcopal Church, where she was ordained as a deacon. She balanced two years of seminary education with full-time work and an internship at a women’s shelter, demonstrating remarkable dedication and perseverance.
As a deacon at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Berkeley, Rev. Ekstrom ministered to her parish and community for nearly a decade. Her work included providing pastoral care, delivering sermons, and supporting outreach efforts. Although she stepped back from parish ministry following personal loss, she credits her experiences in the church with shaping her skills as a storyteller and her ability to connect with others through narrative. Rev. Ekstrom’s literary accomplishments include several published works, such as “Tallis’ Third Tune,” “George of Grasmere,” and “Ascalon.” These books have resonated with readers, earning her recognition from organizations such as Writers Digest Magazine and AllAuthor. Her novel “Tallis’ Third Tune” draws on her experiences, exploring themes of love, faith, and resilience. Rev. Ekstrom’s approach to writing prioritizes authenticity, focusing on stories that reflect her passions and interests rather than following trends.
In addition to her professional achievements, Rev. Ekstrom has actively participated in civic and political initiatives. She volunteered for political campaigns, including those of Hillary Clinton and President Obama, and has supported her community through various outreach programs. Her service extends to mentoring and guiding others in their personal and professional journeys.
In her personal life, Rev. Ekstrom enjoys knitting, biking, and watching baseball. She is the proud mother of three children, including her youngest son, Nicolas, who earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree despite the challenges of autism. Rev. Ekstrom draws inspiration from her family, faith, and the people she serves, maintaining a commitment to fostering understanding and compassion. Rev. Ekstrom plans to continue her writing and publishing endeavors while exploring opportunities to resume parish ministry. She remains dedicated to sharing stories that inspire, educate, and uplift, embodying her belief in the transformative power of literature and service.
