A transformative leader and expert in real estate, Dorothy “Dottie” Herman has built a career of more than 45 years in rentals, buying and selling. Her journey is marked by a steadfast commitment to empowering others and building cohesive, people-centered organizations. Since 2018, Ms. Herman has served as the vice chair of Douglas Elliman, one of the largest residential real estate brokerages in the United States. In this capacity, she has helped shape the company’s strategic direction while championing a culture of inclusivity and collaboration. Her initiatives have fostered authentic interpersonal connections and mutual support among employees, having a profound and enduring impact on the organization’s ethos.
Already an established figure in the field, Ms. Herman initially stepped into the role of chief executive officer at Douglas Elliman in 2003. Holding that position until 2021, she prioritized collaboration and growth while introducing innovative new programs such as inclusive competitions and incentive structures recognizing both top performers and those demonstrating improvement. Social and education events, such as family cruises, became hallmarks of Ms. Herman’s leadership, reinforcing a sense of unity and shared purpose among employees. She also aligned compensation with both individual achievements and overall company performance, ensuring that every employee felt valued and integral to the organization’s success.
In her current position as vice chair of Douglas Elliman, Ms. Herman focuses on consulting work related to commercial real estate projects in New York and beyond. She advises clients on hotel-to-residential conversions and other complex ventures that require strategic vision and regulatory expertise.
Ms. Herman began working in real estate while attending college. When the company she was working for was sold to Merrill Lynch in 1978, she was brought on as the regional manager for the northeast region — a key partner in Merrill Lynch’s expansion into real estate. Overseeing such massive markets as Boston, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New York, Ms. Herman played a pivotal role in managing all facets of this innovative venture. The firm invested heavily in her professional development through extensive training programs, allowing her to build a foundation that she credits for much of her later success.
In addition to her professional training, Ms. Herman has drawn on a solid academic background. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, in the late 1970s. She further distinguished herself by obtaining certification as a financial planner, a credential that has enhanced her ability to provide comprehensive guidance to clients and colleagues alike.
Throughout her career, Ms. Herman has been recognized for her expertise and leadership within the industry. She maintains active membership in the National Association of Realtors and the Long Island Board of Realtors. Ms. Herman also serves on the board of governors for the Real Estate Board of New York. These affiliations have facilitated her capacity to remain at the forefront of industry trends.
Outside of her primary vocation, Ms. Herman has made significant contributions as a media personality and author. Since 2013, she has hosted “Eye on Real Estate” on AM970 The Answer. During this two-hour weekly radio show, Ms. Herman offers listeners advice on real estate trends and financing topics. In 2023, she launched a second weekly show, “Real Talk,” providing a platform for guests to share personal stories about overcoming challenges on their paths to success.
Extending her commitment to service further, Ms. Herman is a longtime supporter of several civic causes. She has volunteered with and donated too such organizations as the American Heart Association, the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, Southampton Hospital and the North Shore Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Ms. Herman serves on the board of her alma mater, Adelphi University. She is also involved with Pacaso, a company pioneering equity-based second home ownership models.
Beyond her professional life, Ms. Herman is a loving mother to her daughter, Christine, and a devoted grandmother to her grandchild, Taylor Madison. As she moves forward, Ms. Herman looks to continue putting her decades of experience to use. She is also nearing completion of a book chronicling her journey and sharing lessons she has learned throughout her career. With a legacy defined by loyalty, leadership and an unwavering dedication to recognizing every individual’s contribution, Ms. Herman hopes her story will inspire others as they navigate their own paths through life.
