Damella Abbott

Damella Abbott has built a meaningful career in higher education administration and student services within the San Diego Community College District, where she plays a central role in fostering inclusive learning environments and supporting student achievement. As senior accounting technician, she manages student funding across multiple campuses, supports counseling services and ensures that classrooms and facilities are prepared daily to meet the needs of a diverse student body. Working closely with a team of five professionals, she also contributes to ongoing research focused on student culture, helping to strengthen the district’s commitment to cultural awareness and equity.

Ms. Abbott holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in business administration, both from University of Phoenix. She is also a graduate of San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, where she completed studies in music performance and general education. She credits her professional growth to continuous development through district-led training, participation in conferences and peer collaboration. By sharing insights about grants, budgets and operations, she actively contributes to maintaining high standards of efficiency and integrity throughout the institution.

In addition to her primary role, Ms. Abbott chairs the cultural events committee for the district. In this leadership capacity, she organizes monthly cultural celebrations across all campuses, ensuring that students from all backgrounds feel welcomed and represented. Her work in this area has led to greater student engagement and has reinforced a sense of belonging within the campus community.

Ms. Abbott’s journey with the district began as a student employee and part-time counseling assistant. She later transferred to an independent center within the district, managing documentation and contributing to a major system upgrade. These early responsibilities helped her build technical skills and prepared her for a transition into financial roles. While pursuing her education, she steadily progressed through increasingly complex positions, including her time as an accounting clerk where she gained experience with financial systems, data management and institutional procedures.

Ms. Abbott’s dedication to leadership and service is also reflected in her involvement with the National Society of Leadership and Success, where she engages with other professionals focused on development and mentorship. Beyond the district, she serves on the Jackie Robinson YMCA Scholarship Committee and is an active member of her church, where she participates in faith-based outreach efforts that align with her lifelong commitment to community support.

Much of Ms. Abbott’s drive to create safe and supportive environments stems from her upbringing. Inspired by her mother’s work as an evangelist and her parents’ open-door policy for local youth, she developed a deep understanding of what it means to make others feel valued and welcomed. That same compassion informs every aspect of her work today.

Ms. Abbott enjoys spending time with her siblings, nieces and nephews. She also treasures moments with close friends, many of whom are retired, especially during friendly card games and social gatherings. Known affectionately as “Lady Damella,” a title inspired by a cherished family game involving the iris flower, she is recognized for her warmth, grace and leadership.

Looking ahead, Ms. Abbott aspires to move into senior leadership roles within higher education, such as dean or vice president of business. Her long-term goal is to expand her influence across campuses while upholding values rooted in safety, inclusivity and student-centered success.
