Holding considerable expertise in construction litigation, Carol A. Sigmond was inspired to a career in law after her undergraduate counselor suggested she attend law school. After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Grinnell College in 1972, she joined the Catholic University of America, where she earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1975. She was licensed to practice law by the Virginia State Bar that same year and was subsequently admitted before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit before embarking on her career as assistant general counsel to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in 1978.
Admitted to the District of Columbia Bar in 1980 and the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in 1986, Ms. Sigmond joined Patterson Belkna, Webb & Tyler LLP in 1986 and achieved admittance before the United States Appeals Court for the Federal Circuit and the Maryland State Bar before she left in 1989. She then served as an associate for Tunstead Schechter & Torre from 1989 to 1991 and was admitted to the United States District Court for the District of Maryland in 1990. She became licensed to practice law by the New York State Bar and admitted to the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York prior to joining the New York City law firm Berman Paley Goldstein & Kannry as an associate in 1991.
Following this, Ms. Sigmond opened her own private practice, the Law Offices of Carol A. Sigmond, which she operated from 1993 to 1997. She was then of counsel for Pollack & Greene LLP from 1998 to 2000 before returning to her private practice from 2000 to 2003. During this time, she was admitted before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Federal Claims Court. From 2004 to 2005, she was a partner with Kehl, Katzive & Sigmond and then held the same role at Dunnington Bartholow & Miller LLP from 2005 to 2013, where she earned admittance to the Court of International Trade in 2006.
Returning to her private practice again from 2013 to 2015, Ms. Sigmond served as a partner and attorney with Cohen Seglias Pallas Greenhall & Furman PC from 2015 to 2020. From 2020 to 2021, she served Porzio, Bromberg & Newman PC as an attorney and the chair of the construction law team. Joining Greenspoon Marder LLP as an attorney in 2021, she intends to continue building her business and acting as a mentor to young lawyers. Above everything, she attributes much of her success to her hard work and creativity. She strives to think outside the box and rethink and challenge every assumption she is presented with.
Alongside her primary career responsibilities, Ms. Sigmond has excelled as an arbitrator and also currently holds a position on the lawyers council of the Citizens Crime Commission of New York City and as the vice president of the First Judicial District of the New York State Bar Association. She previously served as the president of the New York County Lawyers Association from 2015 to 2017, having also spent time as vice president and president-elect. She cites her election as the president of the association as the highlight of her career. She has also spent a number of years on the house of delegates of the American Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association. Other affiliations of hers include Law 360, the General Contractors Association of New York, the National Conference of Bar Presidents and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
An elected fellow of the American Bar Association Forum on Construction Law and the Construction Lawyers Society of America, Ms. Sigmond has been the recipient of a number of honors and accolades of the years. In 2020, she was presented with the Real Estate Section Award for Professionalism by the New York State Bar Association, having been named to the New York Super Lawyers list for construction litigation in 2018. Earlier in her career she had been named a Mann Foundation Residential Real Estate Attorney of the Year in 2009. In addition, she has also been recognized as a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the New York State Bar Foundation. In light of all her accomplishments, Ms. Sigmond has been awarded the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and named a Marquis Who’s Who Top Professional.
