Prior to joining The Reading League, Ms. Smith was the director of advancement services for nearly two years at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, where she played a pivotal role in advancing the college’s mission through strategic financial planning and donor engagement. Beforehand, she was the assistant controller at the same institution for several years, honing skills in financial oversight and management.  Ms. Smith’s career journey began with her role as an in-charge accountant at DeJoy, Knauf & Blood LLP in Rochester, New York, before she transitioned to the nonprofit sector as a staff accountant for the Visiting Nurse Service of Rochester and Monroe County in Webster, New York. Academically preparing for her profession, Ms. Smith earned a Master of Science in accounting and a Bachelor of Science in accounting, both from Nazareth University, providing her with a strong foundation in accounting principles and business operations. Such early knowledge has been crucial to her ability to throughout her career translate financial data into compelling narratives that demonstrate the impact of fundraising efforts. Strengthening her credentials, Ms. Smith earned a certified fundraising executive designation in 2024, underscoring her commitment to excellence in her field. Further, to keep up with and contribute to developments in her sector, she is a member of the Central New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Ms. Smith’s civic involvement is extensive, as she prioritizes giving back to her community. She serves as the board treasurer for YMCA-WEIU, a finance committee member at St. Mary’s Church, and a volunteer at the Seward House Museum. She also served on the board of directors for Cayuga Centers for nearly five years and was a development committee member for Cameron Communities for several years.

On a more personal level, Ms. Smith finds immense joy in spending time with her husband and two young children. Born in Syracuse, she cherishes the bonds she shares with – and the support and warmth she receives from – her close-knit, extended family.
