Who's Who of Professional Women

ALICE G. MOORE POUNCEY

Although Alice G. Moore Pouncey was always attracted to the idea of pursuing education professionally, it wasn’t until high school that she was introduced to home economics. Her teacher encouraged her to pursue the field further, and the idea stuck in her mind. When the opportunity to enter the field arose a few years later, Ms. Pouncey jumped at the opportunity. She had been teaching psychology, but then the home economics teacher at the school passed away and Ms. Pouncey was asked to take over. She loved the work, and quickly knew she had made the right decision. Her favorite part of the job was seeing her students achieve their goals and achieve great things. She always strove to make sure every student felt valued and supported.

Ms. Pouncey prepared for her endeavors by obtaining an Associate of Arts from Jones County Junior College in 1959, a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1961, and a Master of Education from Livingston University (now the University of West Alabama) in 1968. She then furthered her knowledge by completing postgraduate coursework at the University of Southern Mississippi and Mississippi University. Ms. Pouncey’s first position in the field was as a teacher at Enterprise Middle School, followed by teacher at J.F. Shields High School and professor of psychology and home economics at East Central Community College. She retired in 2001.

As a testament to her hard work and dedication, Ms. Pouncey was honored as an Outstanding Instructor in 1994. She also earned the State 4-H Alumni Award and inclusion in Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest. Among all of her accolades, however, Ms. Pouncey considers her crowning achievement to be her family. She and her husband, Ken, had three children and four grandchildren.

In her spare time, Ms. Pouncey enjoys gardening and traveling.
