Embarking on her career with JP Morgan Chase Bank in 1969, Julia R. Scalia, CRSP, MSA, rose through the ranks to become the client services manager and vice president of the investor services unit with the employment benefit trust department by the time she left the bank in 2006. During this time, she sought higher education, starting at Excelsior College in Albany, New York, where she earned an Associate of Arts in liberal studies in 1985 and a Bachelor of Science in liberal studies in 1988. She furthered her studies with a Master of Science in administration, specializing in service profession administration, from the Metropolitan College of New York in 1990 and certification as a retirement services professional through the American Bankers Association in 1996.
Ms. Scalia came to her current work teaching computer science after she obtained a certificate in data processing from St. Joseph College New York. She went on to serve as an instructor of computer and thesis writing at her alma mater, the Metropolitan College of New York, from 2003 to 2007 before joining the Long Island Business Institute as an instructor in the Professional Business College. During this time, she furthered her education and earned certification in typing speed, Access, SQL and HTML from the National Computer Science Academy in 2012. In 2014, Ms. Scalia became the coordinator for the Academic Success Center at the Long Island Business Institute, a position she held until 2021.
Since 2021, Ms. Scalia has served as the director of the Academic Success Center at the Long Island Business Institute, where she teaches in a part-time and substitute capacity and coordinates the tutoring programs offered by the center. Throughout her career, she has sought continuing education courses in order to stay on top of the ever advancing field of computer technology. When programs change or update, she ensures that she completes the necessary course work to maintain her certification in those programs. In addition to maintaining professional affiliation with the American Bankers Association, Ms. Scalia has completed certification courses at Brooklyn College, the Penn Foster Career School, the New York Business Institute, Excelsior College, and, most recently, at the New York City College of Technology in 2019.
Having accomplished much over the course of her career, Ms. Scalia considers the highlight of her professional life to be the day she graduated with her master’s degree, October 4, 1990, as the completion of her degree enabled her to achieve the position that she wanted. Furthermore, her excellence has been recognized with a number of honors and accolades. In 1999, she was presented with a Distinguished Service Award from the Metropolitan College of New York Alumni Association, and she later achieved an Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award from the Long Island Business Institute in 2017. Looking toward the future, Ms. Scalia hopes to continue teaching for as along as she is able.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, to parents Alessio and Rose, Ms. Scalia’s family also includes two late sisters, Anne, her identical twin sister, and Loretta Feil, her older sister. With all three of them pursuing careers as teachers, Anne taught alongside Ms. Scalia at the Long Island Business Institute, though she taught math, finance and economics, where Ms. Scalia taught office technology and computers. Loretta also taught math, but at a grammar school. Over the course of her tenure at the Long Island Business Institute, Ms. Scalia has been deeply grateful to the support and mentorship of Monica W. Foote, the college president, who she cites as the most compassionate, hardworking woman she has ever met.
