Volunteering in the office, Minnie M. Cassell has served as the coordinator of the Cure d’Ars Catholic Church since 2010. As its ministries grow, the church, a multi-ethnic community of Catholic Christians rooted in African American spirituality, continues to be a beacon of hope, a sign of the healing and reconciling presence of Christ to all. In addition to this professional role, Ms. Cassell contributes much of her time to her local community. Having served as choir counsel chair and member on the board of directors of the Spirituals Project Choir for over two decades, she was active with the Denver Hospice in 2007 and the Denver Place from 2010 to 2011. She has also participated with the Metropolitan Organizations for People.
After graduating high school, Ms. Cassell moved to Denver in 1973 and walked into the doors of the church, where she began working as an usher. She has done everything as a volunteer, including being an usher, singing in the choir, and serving on the environment committee and as office manager. She works a lot in her church. Ms. Cassell is also proud of the integration she created within the companies that hired her. She started working for the Denver Athletic Club and was the first African American to be placed into their offices. She then went into automatic data processing and was the first African American to become a supervisor. She also worked in a bank, and was the first African American supervisor there as well.
In recognition of her myriad accomplishments, Ms. Cassell was honored as a Black Catholic Officer of the Archdiocese of Denver for her service in the black Catholic Church in 2016. She has learned to be patient and tactful in her many years of experience, and hopes to continue working in the church.
