Denise M. Geiger

Committed to improving outcomes for students with disabilities, Denise M. Geiger has forged a distinguished career of nearly 40 years in education. Since 1999, she has served as the senior transition coordinator for special education at the Leander Independent School District (ISD), a role she developed from its inception. In this capacity, Ms. Geiger oversees comprehensive systems supporting students with disabilities from ages 3 through 22. Her responsibilities include ensuring that services are aligned to foster results-oriented success, training staff on self-determination in early childhood, empowering students to participate actively and maintaining robust transition services across the district for students aged 18-plus. Under her guidance, Leander ISD’s transition program has expanded significantly — from a single job coach to a team of more than 40 across the district.

Prior to joining Leander ISD, Ms. Geiger gained extensive experience in the education of deaf students. She began as an elementary teacher specializing in deaf education in 1987 for several years before moving to the middle school level. Ms. Geiger devoted another eight years to deaf education as a high school teacher, where she witnessed firsthand how the federal landscape was evolving to emphasize meaningful transitions after high school for individuals with disabilities. During this period, she proactively sought opportunities to address gaps in service delivery and championed the importance of aligning educational goals with students’ aspirations.

Throughout her tenure with Leander ISD, Ms. Geiger has been instrumental in developing innovative programs such as Transition English, a class tailored for students aged 18 to 22 that addresses transition topics relevant to adult life. Transition English is now implemented across all six high schools in the district, and she continues to advocate for progressive curricula.

Ms. Geiger’s impact is most visibly recognized by the dedication of the Denise Geiger Compass Center on September 6, 2025 — an event attended by many former students. This facility houses nearly 150 students with disabilities aged 18 and above. The building stands as a testament to Ms. Geiger’s vision and enduring influence within the district and community. She considers this honor her proudest achievement, reflecting both her pioneering work in education and her unwavering belief in uplifting students’ voices and helping them achieve independence and fulfillment beyond school.

Before venturing onto her vocational path, Ms. Geiger established an academic foundation for her future. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in communication disorders from Oklahoma State University in 1985. Subsequently, Ms. Geiger earned a master’s degree in deaf education from Lamar University in 1987. She credits her success to her innovative mindset and her upbringing by her parents, whose faith, resilience and encouragement shaped her values of kindness, hard work and service.

To remain aware of developments affecting her field, Ms. Geiger has maintained professional affiliations with a number of pertinent organizations. She maintains active membership in the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division on Career and Transition Development.

Outside of her primary role at Leander ISD, Ms. Geiger is deeply engaged in civic organizations and community initiatives. She has served on the boards of Paxton Patterson and Inspiring Access since 2025, and as an educator with the Leander Education Excellence Foundation since 2023. Ms. Geiger holds an advisory position with NonPareil Austin and has chaired the Christian Emphasis Committee at the Twin Lakes Family YMCA since 2016. She has also served three terms as a deacon and has taught Sunday school at her local Presbyterian church.

Lauded for her decades of hard work, Ms. Geiger has been honored with numerous accolades. Most notably, she received the Sunshine Award for Outstanding Educator in the Area from Hill Country Community Ministries in 2024. Ms. Geiger has been frequently featured at professional conferences. In 2025, she presented at the Texas Transition Conference, appearing on a panel highlighting exceptional transition services in the state.

On a personal note, Ms. Geiger is happily married to her spouse, Brent, and is a loving mother to two sons. She values finding balance between work commitments and her well-being. She particularly enjoys reading, writing and traveling with family — especially on cruises.

As she approaches the milestone of 40 years in her career, Ms. Geiger plans to retire from full-time work in the years ahead. However, she intends to remain active through consulting work focused on educational transition services for school districts. Ms. Geiger aims to ensure that the systems she helped build will continue to thrive independently well into the future. She also looks forward to pursuing personal projects, such as writing about her family history.
