Shannon L. Deck, CPA, MST, has built a distinguished career as a tax consultant and currently serves as managing partner at Haskell & Davis CPA, a full-service accounting firm offering professional, personalized services and guidance in a wide range of financial and business needs. She joined the firm as a tax consultant in 2014, playing a key role in fostering a collaborative and trust-driven business environment. Over the years, she merged her practice with Haskell & Davis CPA and advanced to her current role at the Woodland Hills location. Her expertise in taxation, accounting, high-net-worth families, closely held businesses, and flow-through entities has been instrumental in transforming professional relationships into lasting personal connections. Committed to her clients, she focuses on tax planning and preparation strategies that minimize liabilities and maximize financial opportunities.
Before joining Haskell & Davis CPA, Ms. Deck owned and operated Deck & Associates from 2012 to 2015. Prior to that, she served as a tax manager at Rose, Snyder & Jacobs from 2010 to 2012 and as a tax senior at Moss Adams LLP from 2007 to 2010. Her career began at The Walt Disney Company in 2005, where she led property tax initiatives until 2006. In addition, she serves as an advisory board member for the Bookstein Institute for Higher Education in Taxation, which supports activities that encourage a greater understanding of the dynamic field of taxation, and actively supports Disabled American Veterans, a nonprofit organization that provides support to veterans and their families, through charitable contributions.
Ms. Deck laid a strong academic foundation, completing coursework in international business with a focus on accounting at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. She earned an associate degree in economics from West Valley College in 1999, followed by a Bachelor of Science in accountancy from the same institution in 2005. She later obtained a Master of Science in taxation from California State University, Northridge in 2010. Her professional credentials include certification as a certified public accountant by the California Board of Accountancy since 2008, along with a certified tax preparer license.
Reflecting on her path, Ms. Deck began her career working at an office supply company handling accounts payable and receivable but felt a strong desire to further her education. She approached the company’s chief financial officer, advocating for support to pursue business studies. Recognizing her potential, they agreed to fund her first two years of schooling. In 1999, she earned an associate degree in economics from West Valley College and, through encouragement, explored accounting. She quickly discovered an intuitive grasp of the subject, excelling in her coursework, earning perfect scores on every exam, and becoming a sought-after tutor among her peers.
Ms. Deck believes her genuine care for clients sets her apart, prioritizing integrity over financial considerations. She views true abundance as a result of a strong moral compass and doing what is right, even when no one is watching. No longer driven by paychecks or promotions, she finds fulfillment in her work and the impact she makes, knowing she has everything she needs. Looking to the future, Ms. Deck plans to identify a promising candidate to take on a partnership role rooted in a spirit of service. She envisions collaborating with another established sole practitioner to share administrative responsibilities, strengthening the foundation for managing operations. Her goal is to double the size of the practice by adding a partner, a manager, and additional staff to support its growth. In her personal life, Ms. Deck is devoted to her children and enjoys trail running, gardening, and sports cars—pursuits that provide balance and fulfillment beyond her professional commitments.
