Jacqueline Anim

With more than three decades of expertise in materials engineering, Dr. Jacqueline A. Anim has proudly influenced the field of material utilization for medical devices. Since 2009, she has excelled in multiple positions for Ethicon, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. She joined the company as a staff life cycle materials engineer until taking on the role of principal materials engineer in 2015. In 2020, she was promoted to senior principal materials engineer, in which she consults and designs directions for the use of materials in the manufacturing of medical devices, including surgical devices and robotic instruments. In addition, she supports the research and development of manufacturing plants and is responsible for overseeing the plants, new material selections, and transformation of materials into medical products.

Early on in her career, Dr. Anim served as a senior program manager for Delphi/General Motors from 1992 to 2009. Today, she continues to offer her expertise as a reviewer of medical material process textbooks and a contributor to journal articles. Holding several patents in this space, she is frequently invited to provide the keynote address at conferences, and she is a regular panelist at medical device and manufacturing trade shows. Her influence in the industry aided her in coaching and helping others, and she has successfully led large collaboration teams across continents. Additionally, Dr. Anim is a member of the ICN Congress for Global Communications and the founder and president of Smiling Hope Ministry, an international nonprofit.

Dr. Anim recalls that she became involved in her profession due to her curiosity, as she was always looking for relevant, unmet societal needs and seeking areas to which she could contribute. To achieve her goals, she enrolled at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1991. Subsequently, she achieved a Master of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Dayton in 1995. Additionally, Dr. Anim was granted an honorary degree in humanity from the United Graduate College and Seminary International.

Finding great success in her endeavors, Dr. Anim’s industry-wide accomplishments include being the first Black female to be inducted into the Johnson & Johnson Innovation Hall of Fame in 2023. Named a Leading Woman in Engineering and Science by Medical Design Briefs in 2021, she was voted Professional Engineer of the Year and a Woman of Excellence Industry Leader by the Professional Organization of Women of Excellence Recognized in 2019. Additionally, at Johnson & Johnson, she was the recipient of the 2019 Inspired Award for Making the World a Better Place and the 2015 Excellence in Science Award. Earlier, Dr. Anim took home the Excellence in Transportation Award from the Society of Plastics Engineers, as well as the Environmentally Conscious Manufacturing Award, Most Innovative Interior in Automotive Award and Global Excellence Award.

Dr. Anim attributes her success to her desire to create and build a better world for all humanity. As an advocate, she hopes to continue her work on global warming and environmental awareness, as well as invest in the end-of-life management of plastics to prevent global warming. Likewise, she hopes to continue to train and mentor others at Ethicon, Inc.
