Yara Beyh

Driven by a passion to transform the understanding and treatment of metabolic diseases, Yara S. Beyh, PhD, MSc, LD, is a postdoctoral fellow at Emory University, advancing pioneering research in diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism. In this role, she analyzes complex data, authors scientific papers and grant proposals, organizes collaborative meetings across the Emory research community, and facilitates regular sessions aimed at generating innovative ideas. Her current work explores the phenotyping of type 2 diabetes, the classification of its subclusters, and the development of targeted treatment strategies designed to prevent complications.  

Dr. Beyh’s academic foundation has been central to her career development and scientific expertise. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy in nutrition and health science from Emory University, completing doctoral research focused on diabetes and related metabolic disorders. She also holds a Master of Science in nutrition sciences and a Bachelor of Science in nutrition and dietetics from the American University of Beirut, along with specialized certifications in radiation safety, NIE and animal study research. Her formal education began with the French Baccalaureate in life sciences from Lycee Franco Libanais Verdun in Beirut, laying the groundwork for a lifelong commitment to science and discovery. 

Throughout her career, Dr. Beyh has held a series of progressively responsible positions that have shaped her into a versatile and accomplished researcher. She has worked as an ad-hoc reviewer for multiple academic journals, applying her analytical skills to evaluate and improve the quality of published research. At the American University of Beirut, she contributed as a research assistant, refining her skills in scientific investigation and data analysis. Simultaneously, she shared her knowledge as an instructor at Lebanese University, nurturing the next generation of nutrition professionals. 

In addition to her research, Dr. Beyh contributes to the broader scientific dialogue as an active member of the American Diabetes Association, the Society for Epidemiologic Research, and the American Society for Nutrition. Her achievements have been recognized through multiple honors, including the Livingston Fellowship from the Livingston Foundation and two Nalini and Ravi Saligram Scholarships from the Nalini and Ravi Saligram Foundation. These awards underscore her leadership potential, research excellence and dedication to improving global health outcomes. 

Dr. Beyh’s professional journey also includes experience outside of academia. As an account manager for Sohati.com, she managed client relationships and contributed to public health communication initiatives. She further supported faculty-led projects as a graduate assistant at the American University of Beirut and gained clinical experience as head dietitian at BSC, overseeing nutritional programs and patient care. Early clinical training included a dietetic internship at Makassed General Hospital and volunteer service at The Diet Center, experiences that strengthened her clinical knowledge and patient-centered approach. She began her career as a medical representative for Sanofi Pasteur Pharmaceuticals, developing foundational skills in health care communication and advocacy. 

One of the most impactful milestones in Dr. Beyh’s career was her leadership in organizing a landmark event at the Global Diabetes Forum in Copenhagen, Denmark. Working alongside her supervisor, she convened more than 50 international experts to collaborate on a significant declaration aimed at advancing diabetes care. This initiative revived a crucial global dialogue on the future of diabetes management and led to a published commentary in “The Lancet Diabetes and Chronic Disease”, with a comprehensive report forthcoming. 

Dr. Beyh’s scholarly contributions extend beyond her research projects. She has published influential work, including a chapter in the LCJ Encyclopedia highlighting her expertise in diabetes and a book chapter examining COVID-19 and comorbidities during the pandemic. These publications address critical issues faced by individuals with pre-existing conditions and reflect her commitment to advancing public health knowledge. 

Looking ahead, Dr. Beyh is focused on securing funding for a K1 grant, which will provide the independence and flexibility necessary to shape her future institutional path. She also plans to pursue an R grant to support her transition into an assistant professor role, allowing her to further advance diabetes research and mentor emerging scientists.
