A leader in organization transformation and human capital consulting with Deloitte, Valronica M. Scales, EdD, has dedicated her career to driving change and fostering inclusivity in corporate and educational settings. At Deloitte, Dr. Scales leads client teams in implementing change management strategies. She collaborates closely with leaders to streamline processes, enhance branding, and improve communication across various sectors, including technology, supply chain, and network operations. Her commitment to sustainable change helps organizations navigate complex transitions with a clear vision for the future.
Dr. Scales’s journey began with a solid academic foundation. In 2007, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a minor in health science from Elon University, followed by a Master of Education in higher education and student affairs administration from Loyola University Chicago. In 2022, she achieved another significant milestone by earning her Doctor of Education in adult and higher education from Northern Illinois University. Her dissertation received the Dissertation of the Year Award from the American College Personnel Association, highlighting her devotion to research and scholarship.
Dr. Scales has held many administrative and leadership positions in higher education throughout her career. She began as a program coordinator at the Young Women’s Leadership Charter School of Chicago. She later assumed roles at Washington University in St. Louis, including residential college director, assistant director, and associate director of residential life. Her leadership skills and dedication to student affairs led her to director roles at Northwestern University and the University of Maryland, significantly impacting residential life programs and student engagement.
Dr. Scales transitioned into consulting when she joined Deloitte in 2021, expanding her change management, training, and communication expertise. She focuses on developing comprehensive training plans, facilitating consensus among leaders, and guiding organizations through complex transformations. Her ability to communicate the benefits of change has made her an asset to clients and colleagues. Dr. Scales attributes much of her success to her determination, resilience, and the unwavering support of her family, especially her late mother, Helen M. Scales, whose encouragement and belief in education profoundly shaped her career. Personal experiences also have fueled Dr. Scales’s professional journey. Diagnosed with thyroid cancer at 30, she faced her health challenges with the same tenacity she brings to her work. By 32, she had already reached the role of a director, demonstrating her ability to overcome obstacles and thrive in demanding environments. Her experience as a cancer survivor is her inspiration, and within the next five to ten years, she aims to establish a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting young adult cancer patients and survivors, reflecting her commitment to making a meaningful impact beyond her current roles.
Dr. Scales is active in civic and volunteer work. She is the recording secretary on the board of directors for the Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc., and devotes her time to assisting cancer survivors. As vice president of the Sledge Institute, she furthers her commitment to accessible education, community service, and advocacy while continuously seeking opportunities to mentor those around her. She has received recognition for her achievements through many awards, such as the Outstanding Women and Gender Advocacy Student Award and the Phyllis Cunningham Social Justice Award from Northern Illinois University. In 2022, she was named one of the 40 Under 40, acknowledging her influence in her field and advocacy for young cancer survivors. Dr. Scales credits her accomplishments to her positive outlook and commitment to joy—to her twin sister, Aunt Melody, and former supervisor Jill Stratton, who emphasized the importance of finding joy in everyday moments. Taking pride in connecting with people, fostering inclusive environments, and creating positive change, her tenure at Deloitte has broadened her understanding of corporate America and enhanced her skills in contract management, strategic communication, and client engagement. Wisely, she always considers the long-term impact of her actions and seeks opportunities to build relationships, collaborate, and innovate.
Dr. Scales cherishes time with her family, and her twin sister, brother, nephew, dad, and her dog serve as significant sources of inspiration and support. She enjoys traveling, exploring new cities and restaurants, cooking, and engaging in volunteer work. Her passion for advocating for others shows through her nurturing spirit and commitment to making a difference in the lives of those around her. Dr. Scales remains open to new opportunities in corporate leadership or the non-profit sector. She envisions a future filled with continual growth, demonstrating that anything is possible with resilience and a robust support system.
