Shelley Fleming Black has built a multifaceted career that bridges the worlds of environmental design, client advocacy and creative innovation. As principal of Fleming-Black Group Inc., she leads a practice rooted in eco-conscious principles and personalized service. Her work reflects a passion for sustainable living, design excellence and the health of the people she serves. From overseeing residential projects to supporting individuals with environmental sensitivities, she brings intention and expertise to every client interaction. In Denver, her leadership was central to the success of three design show houses, where she managed teams of designers and helped bring thoughtful, green-centered design into public view.

Ms. Black’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Russian language and area studies from the University of Colorado Boulder and an associate degree in interior design from Arapahoe Community College. These academic experiences have shaped her perspective, combining analytical depth with artistic sensibility. Her transition from political service to design was informed by a lifelong curiosity and a belief that living spaces can enhance health and wellbeing when designed with care and awareness.

Prior to founding Fleming-Black Group Inc., Ms. Black spent several years at IBM in software marketing. There, she was immersed in a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. The company supported her long-term career planning and encouraged her to explore new challenges, helping her build the project management and leadership skills that now inform her business practices. Her time at IBM was pivotal, sharpening her strategic thinking and reinforcing her belief in collaborative success.

Ms. Black began her career in Washington, D.C., serving as an administrator for the U.S. Congress and as press secretary to U.S. Representative Donald G. Brotzman. These early roles demanded strong communication skills, composure under pressure and the ability to manage fast-moving, high-stakes responsibilities. The experience instilled in her a confidence and discipline that would carry through her future endeavors.

Outside her professional work, Ms. Black has dedicated herself to mentoring and community service. She volunteered with SCORE Denver as a press secretary, counselor and workshop director, designing and leading classes for aspiring entrepreneurs. Her outreach extended to one-on-one mentorship, helping individuals turn ideas into sustainable business ventures. Her commitment to community is also reflected in her active participation in the Episcopal Church and support of organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

A turning point in Ms. Black’s career came during a panel discussion on design when she realized the critical need to prioritize sustainability alongside aesthetics. That moment deepened her resolve to promote eco-friendly practices within her field and educate others on their value. Her contributions have been recognized in local media, including an acknowledgment from The Denver Post for her work in feng shui design.

Inspired by her father’s example as a business owner, Ms. Black developed a strong work ethic and sense of independence early in life. She continues to apply these values in her business, where she remains committed to advancing sustainable design, supporting client wellness and making a meaningful difference through her work.
