Sharon D. Highland, MSAE, CIMA, has earned a reputation as a bold and visionary leader in asset management, shaping strategies that prioritize both performance and people. As president and founder of Barak Asset Management LLC, she leads a firm recognized for its ability to navigate complex market conditions with a focus on long-term growth and investor confidence. Her leadership reflects a blend of analytical rigor, entrepreneurial drive and a deep understanding of the financial landscape. From her earliest roles in investment to her present-day responsibilities, she has continually advanced the goals of her clients while helping to expand access to quality asset management services. 

Ms. Highland’s foundation in finance was built on a strong academic background and early professional exposure. She holds a Master of Science in applied economics from Boston College and a Bachelor of Science in business administration with a minor in accounting from York College, City University of New York. Her academic training, combined with a lifelong passion for economics and strategic thinking, has served as a constant guide throughout her career. In addition to her degrees, she holds FINRA Series 7 and Series 66 certifications and has earned the Certified Investment Management Analyst designation, reinforcing her technical expertise in the investment field. 

Ms. Highland’s professional journey began at Oppenheimer Capital, where she advanced to become head of trading for retail accounts. During this time, she played a key role in developing the firm’s asset management capabilities, ultimately overseeing net capital investment management across tens of thousands of accounts. Her work at Oppenheimer laid the groundwork for future leadership roles in some of the most influential financial institutions in the country. 

Ms. Highland later joined Allianz Global Investors GmbH as senior vice president. There, she managed significant portfolios and pioneered trading systems designed to improve both operational efficiency and client service. She continued to distinguish herself at BlackRock Inc. as a director and she was instrumental in launching the VDP fund. Despite the timing of its debut during the holiday season, she successfully raised $250 million for the fund, which grew to $1 billion and became one of BlackRock’s leading offerings. Her ability to lead during high-pressure moments speaks to her resilience, strategic mindset and commitment to client outcomes. 

Throughout her career, Ms. Highland has demonstrated a consistent ability to scale operations, introduce innovative investment products and build high-performing teams. Her contributions have been central to the success of firms such as PIMCO Advisors LP, where she was part of efforts to develop a $10 billion management company. These accomplishments reflect her capability not only in managing assets but in guiding institutional growth. 

Ms. Highland’s entrepreneurial reach extends into small business advocacy through the founding of the Amalgamated Businesses Consortium. This initiative supports local entrepreneurs by offering guidance with operational needs and compliance requirements, reinforcing her belief in economic empowerment through education and access. As she continues to lead Barak Asset Management LLC and mentor the next generation of finance professionals, she is committed to building both wealth and purpose in the lives of those she serves.
