Peggy McMahon, PhD, a compassionate pioneer in psychological healing, has dedicated more than three decades to transforming lives through her expertise. She currently excels as the founder and principal psychologist at Peggy McMahon PhD P.A., where she works closely with patients to address their concerns while managing the administrative aspects of her practice. With a deep expertise in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), she has been instrumental in raising awareness and ensuring access to effective therapy through public conferences and support groups in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Before establishing her practice, Dr. McMahon worked as a certified public accountant in New York, providing financial stability while pursuing her passion for psychology. Her fascination with human behavior ultimately led her to transition into the field, earning a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1995. She credits Dr. Robert Gatchel’s mentorship as pivotal in her education and career development.
Moreover, Dr. McMahon is an active member of the American Psychological Association and has facilitated a local OCD support group for 15 years. She is also affiliated with the International OCD Foundation and volunteers at a local homeless shelter, elementary school reading programs, and community church activities. Her dedication to the field has earned her recognition, including being named one of the top three psychologists in Plano. She attributes her success to her unwavering commitment to helping others, guided by the motto, “You’re stronger than you think you are.”
An accomplished author and speaker, Dr. McMahon has written a comic book about OCD, which she plans to publish online. Additionally, she has spoken at various conferences, including those organized by the Dallas-Fort Worth Association and local OCD conferences, furthering awareness and education on OCD treatment. She believes her extensive hands-on experience, beyond academic learning, sets her apart, allowing her to provide personalized, effective treatment through careful observation and analysis.
Dr. McMahon specialization in treating OCD has been developed through years of practical experience. In addition to academic training, her deep understanding stems from countless hours of observing, analyzing, and applying treatment strategies to provide effective care for her patients.
Outside of her professional life, Dr. McMahon enjoys spending time with her family, exercising, sculpting, painting, and creating artwork. Looking ahead, she plans to continue organizing successful conferences and reviving support groups for individuals with OCD post-pandemic. She also hopes to travel more and enjoy the simple joys of family relationships while witnessing the growth of her grandchildren.
Dr. McMahon believes that her legacy is defined by her genuine care for her patients and her belief that with patience and effort, anyone can improve their condition. She notes that working with patients who have OCD is both challenging and rewarding. OCD requires specialized behavioral therapy, which can be highly effective when followed correctly. She emphasizes to her patients that therapy focuses on changing behaviors rather than feelings. While it is natural for patients to discuss their experiences, the key to progress lies in making adjustments to their behaviors. This approach can be difficult but is essential for improvement.
Dr. McMahon wants her current and future patients to know that conditions like anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, and PTSD are all treatable. No one has to suffer alone or accept these challenges as permanent. With the right support and treatment, there is a way forward, and meaningful improvement is possible. She encourages individuals to seek help, assuring them that healing and recovery are within reach.
