Nicole Delgado-Salisbury

Nicole E. Delgado-Salisbury, EdD, has a successful career in health care administration and education, specializing in enhancing communication between health care providers and patients. She currently serves as an education specialist and behavioral faculty member at the New York Medical College at St. Joseph’s Family Medicine Residency Program, a role in which she has excelled since 2020. In this capacity, she focuses on medical education, emphasizing the importance of clear, patient-centered communication. 

Dr. Delgado-Salisbury’s main focus is simplifying medical language, ensuring patients fully understand their conditions and treatment plans. She advocates for techniques like “teach-back” to confirm comprehension and prevent confusion. Her work centers on diabetes education, behavioral health, and population medicine. As co-chair of recruitment with the New York Medical College at St. Joseph’s Family Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Delgado-Salisbury helps interview 120 doctors annually and contributes to research, IRB proposals, and conference presentations. Additionally, as director of wellness, she teaches mindfulness, stress reduction, and breathing techniques to support physician well-being. 

Dr. Delgado-Salisbury’s career began in the New York City Department of Education, where she worked as a literacy specialist and teacher leader from 2005 to 2018. She later transitioned to higher education, serving as a field specialist at Fordham University and leading educational research and program outreach at Mercy College, now Mercy University. Moreover, she is actively involved in professional organizations, including the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the New York State Academy of Family Physicians, and the American College of Healthcare Executives. She is also a member of the faculty senate at New York Medical College. 

Laying a solid educational foundation, Dr. Delgado-Salisbury earned a Bachelor of Arts in religion and history from Hunter College, part of the City University of New York, in 2003. In 2005, she completed a Master of Science in Education in literacy at Long Island University, after which she earned a Master of Science in Education in educational leadership and administration in 2010, and a Doctor of Education in educational leadership, administration, and policy from Fordham University in 2019.

Reflecting on her path, Dr. Delgado-Salisbury takes pride in the progress she has made through her research and academic contributions. When she first joined her current program, the team faced challenges in research, but through dedication and collaboration, they now actively participate in national conferences. Their presence has expanded beyond posters to include lectures, seminars, workshops, and roundtables. Dr. Delgado-Salisbury finds the research process deeply rewarding, from the initial idea to the final presentation. 

In light of her impressive undertakings, Dr. Delgado-Salisbury received Innovation Awards in 2022 and 2023, as well as an award from residents at St. Joseph’s Family Medicine Residency Program. Her contributions to medical publications include serving as an essay reviewer for the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine and presenting at conferences such as the Lifestyle Medicine Conference. She attributes her success to her commitment to supporting colleagues and her ability to implement organizational change. 

Currently, Dr. Delgado-Salisbury is applying for an assistant dean of student affairs position at a medical school in Vermont. While she works in graduate medical education, she seeks to expand into undergraduate medical education, guiding students through the residency application process and supporting them from medical school entry to residency placement. Her long-term goal is to continue making a meaningful impact on the lives of students and patients. Outside of her professional life, Dr. Delgado-Salisbury is a dedicated mother to her children, Claire and Grace. She values family time and balances her career with her responsibilities as a parent, instilling in her children the same commitment to education and communication
