Nancy E. Hicks, PhD, has enjoyed teaching at the post-secondary level for over 30 years. She currently serves as a professor in the applied business communication program in the business information systems department in the College of Business Administration at Central Michigan University, where she began teaching in 1998. From 1987 to 1997, she served as a business professor at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Hicks is a member of several professional organizations. Her research record includes over 18 peer-reviewed journal article publications, one textbook, countless presentations, and training and consulting work.
Connecting with her students has always been a driving force in and out of the classroom for Dr. Hicks. She has written hundreds of letters of reference for students and personally recommended students to employers. She has built many life-long relationships with her students as a result. Being involved on-campus has also enabled her to speak to diverse groups of students across campus about essential career skills in areas like resume writing and networking. She has also mentored many colleagues one-on-one and in workshops on the improvement of classroom teaching and course design. Dr. Hicks has consulted with a variety of businesses and educational institutions in providing training on business writing, the improvement of teaching, and presentation skills.
Dr. Hicks has been honored to receive numerous teaching awards throughout her career. These include the Excellence in Teaching Award by Central Michigan University in 2004, who also honored her with the Student Choice Award in 2012. She was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award for Central Michigan University’s College of Business Administration in 2017 and 2001, as well as the Dean’s Teaching Award in 2000. Dr. Hicks attributes her success to the connections she fosters with her students, as well as her enthusiasm for the subjects she teaches.
Dr. Hicks earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business education from Central Michigan University in 1986. She subsequently earned a Master’s degree in business education in 1989. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree in higher adult and continuing education from Michigan State University in 1994. Looking towards the future, Dr. Hicks intends to continue teaching at Central Michigan University, working with students to ensure their career success.
