
Mary Ann Gust has built a respected career in radiologic sciences, defined by her passion for education, professional advancement and the empowerment of future health care leaders. As program manager at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center School of Health Professions, she leads initiatives that strengthen academic excellence, foster mentorship and elevate the visibility of radiography education. Her work embodies a commitment to progress, reflecting her belief that education is the foundation of meaningful change in health care.
Ms. Gust’s academic background has been an instrumental part of her success. She earned a master’s degree in radiologic sciences with an emphasis in education and radiography education from the MD Anderson Cancer Center School of Health Professions at The University of Texas, where she also completed her bachelor’s degree. Her educational journey began in Colorado and concluded in Washington, D.C., where she completed her initial training as a radiographer. She also holds the designation of TeamSTEPPS master trainer from the American Hospital Association, underscoring her expertise in teamwork and effective communication within health care environments.
Ms. Gust’s commitment to excellence has earned her recognition through multiple honors, including the Alpha Ada Award and being named Clinical Instructor of the Year on two occasions. Beyond accolades, she finds fulfillment in visiting more than 25 clinical sites and witnessing former students lead departments, secure stable careers and become the first in their families to earn college degrees. These milestones embody the transformative impact of her work.
In her role at MD Anderson, Ms. Gust manages the mentor-mentee program, oversees the annual National Radiologic Technology Week conference and chairs multiple institutional events and committees. She contributes to the interprofessional education platform, speaks at conferences locally and internationally and participates in the selection of prospective students for the program. One of her most significant achievements is guiding one of only two programs in Texas that offer a bachelor’s degree in radiography. Her leadership has helped raise the professional standing of radiography, ensuring that graduates enter the field with advanced credentials and a deeper understanding of patient-centered care.
Ms. Gust’s professional experience at MD Anderson spans clinical and educational leadership. She has worked as a radiologic technologist and later as a clinical instructor, roles through which she honed her technical proficiency and inspired students to pursue excellence. These experiences gave her a comprehensive understanding of diagnostic medical imaging and laid the groundwork for her transition into program management, overseeing curriculum, mentorship, and academic programming with a focus on quality and innovation.
Ms. Gust remains deeply involved in professional organizations that support the advancement of radiologic sciences. She serves as chapter director for Lambda Nu National Honors Society, treasurer for TXSRT.org and member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. Her engagement in these associations reflects her dedication to professional development and her desire to strengthen collaboration across the field.
Born in Opp, Alabama, Ms. Gust is the first in her family to earn a college degree and takes pride in having changed her family’s legacy through education. As a single mother of three children, including one with special needs, she exemplifies resilience and determination. She remains actively engaged in her community, volunteering with Meals on Wheels America and supporting the Hope for Christmas initiative, where she helps create joyful holiday experiences for families in need.
Outside her professional responsibilities, Ms. Gust enjoys hosting life groups and playing pickleball, finding balance in activities that nurture connection and wellness. In the future, she aspires to advance to the role of associate program director and pursue doctoral studies in learning technologies education, continuing her lifelong mission to expand access, equity and excellence in radiography education.
