Capt. Lindsay M. Price is a highly decorated and dedicated mariner who has made major contributions to her industry throughout her long career, including her invaluable work with G&H Towing Company, a harbor assist tug company based in Galveston, Texas. She made history as the company’s first female officer and later the first female captain.
Capt. Price’s critical responsibilities at G&H Towing Company included assisting ships in and out of ports, including Houston, Galveston, Texas City, Freeport, and Corpus Christi, planning daily operations, coordinating with the crew, monitoring the vessel’s safety and operations at sea, and much more. This role required constant vigilance, adaptability, and effective logistics management. Further, in September 2022, Capt. Price was sought out and selected to be one of four Falcon Recovery captains at SpaceX. She resigned from her position at SpaceX in 2024.
In preparation for her future achievements, Capt. Price graduated from State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College with a Bachelor of Science in marine environmental sciences and a U.S. Coast Guard 3rd Mate Unlimited Tonnage License in 2007. Highly qualified in her field, Capt. Price has earned a succession of key credentials from the U.S. Coast Guard, including Master of self-propelled vessels of various capacities, Master of towing vessels, and designated examiner, as well as holding first-class pilotage in multiple ports. In recognition of her ongoing achievements, Capt. Price was named to Maritime’s 40 under 40 and presented with the Admiral’s Award by her alma mater. An active competitive swimmer who has been in love with the water since childhood, she was featured on the cover of Swimmer Magazine. She also has climbed some of the tallest mountains in the world and been a guest on many podcasts.
Capt. Price attributes her success to her strong work ethic and determination, which she learned from her mother at a young age. Believing she has steadily grown personally and professionally since the beginning of her career, she says she has always possessed maturity but has gained much more as she has viewed the bigger pictures of her life and career. Working with SpaceX helped her tremendously in this vein. For 15 years, she managed a crew of six people at the most before it suddenly became a crew of 27 for her to balance. Her communication skills skyrocketed as a result of having many more individuals, personalities, and issues to address.
Devoted to the maritime professional community, Capt. Price is a board member with Women Offshore and is a member of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association. She also has been a committee member of the National Towing Safety Advisory Committee and the National Merchant Marine Personnel Advisory Committee since 2021, where she addresses critical issues within the maritime sector. In addition to her work-related contributions, Capt. Price has volunteered with local maritime programs in the Houston area for more than a decade. She is the captain at her local volunteer fire department station and has been with the Seabrook Volunteer Fire Department since 2020, where she proudly serves her community as a firefighter and medical provider. The activity Capt. Price loves most, she says, is getting out on the water and driving boats for the fire department.
Looking ahead, Capt. Price aspires to capture her “greatest achievement” of becoming a harbor pilot responsible for navigating vessels in and out of ports. She already holds pilotage in five U.S. ports and is pursuing her sixth. Attaining a pilotage license involves memorizing and hand-drawing navigational charts in an extensive testing process. The harbor pilot provides expertise in specific ports, guiding ships with local knowledge to ensure safe navigation through narrow channels.
