Kris Hoff has found success over nearly three decades as an expert in immersive, unique and distinctive experiences within the travel and tourism industry. Since 2023, she has excelled as president and co-founder of Distinctively Detroit Tours, a company she established to create experiences that are truly one-of-a-kind. Under her leadership, the company has become known for its creative programming, including the Purple Gang history tour featuring live character portrayals and a hip-hop history tour that explores often-overlooked neighborhoods. Ms. Hoff’s vision is to ensure every tour offers something guests cannot experience on their own, blending entertainment with education and engagement.
In addition to her role at Distinctively Detroit Tours, Ms. Hoff is also the owner and chief executive officer of Happy Times Tours & Experiences in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which she founded in 2020. Launching this business during the COVID-19 pandemic presented significant challenges, but she quickly adapted by focusing on casino tours to meet pent-up demand as restrictions eased. Her reputation in Wisconsin’s tourism sector, built through years of arranging bus tours and participating in travel shows, helped her new venture gain traction rapidly.
Happy Times Tours & Experiences is widely recognized for its “Schlemiel! Schlimazel” Milwaukee tour inspired by “Laverne & Shirley,” and operates with a network of 1,099 independent tour guides. Both companies utilize a shared app to deliver memorable outbound tours and activities that allow participants to enjoy exclusive experiences.
Before becoming an entrepreneur, Ms. Hoff was active as the director at Badger Bus from 2003 to 2020, where she managed operations for one of Wisconsin’s leading motor coach companies. She oversaw transportation logistics and developed engaging tour programs that contributed to the company’s prominence in the region. She previously worked as a tour planner at Travel America from 1998 to 2003, where she refined her skills in itinerary design and customer engagement.
Ms. Hoff began her career as a paralegal at Phillips, Cymerman & Trager, S.C. between 1992 and 1998. Although she initially planned to pursue law school after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at Bryant & Stratton College in Milwaukee in 1994, she realized that her true passion lay elsewhere. The analytical skills and contract knowledge she gained as a paralegal have since proven invaluable in negotiating agreements and conducting research for her businesses.
Throughout her career, Ms. Hoff has maintained her involvement with organizations such as Circle Michigan since 2024, Visit Milwaukee since 2020, Visit Detroit since 2023, the American Bus Association since 2020 and Circle Wisconsin since 2020.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Ms. Hoff is deeply committed to civic engagement and philanthropy. She has served as a sponsor and donor for J. Dilla Days and contributed as a volunteer for animal rescue organizations. Additionally, she supports local schools through donations to parent-teacher associations.
Ms. Hoff’s achievements have been notably recognized with honors such as the Distinctively Detroit Award and the Today Award in 2025. Her expertise has been further highlighted in Groups Today magazine with the article “KRIS HOFF: Providing Groups a ‘Distinctively Detroit’ Experience,” underscoring her influence within the field.
Born in Milwaukee, Ms. Hoff enjoys music, playing the violin and attending live entertainment events during her free time. Looking ahead, she aims to elevate her creativity further by writing television shows inspired by cities like Milwaukee and Detroit. Always seeking new themes and ideas for future projects, Ms. Hoff remains dedicated to innovation within both her professional and personal endeavors.
