Recognized for her passion and talent, Joyce Sattler Howard spent decades in academia before retiring. She became interested in teaching because she wanted to help her own children with their education, and thus she earned an Associate of Arts from Nassau Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education and a Master of Arts from Adelphi University. After becoming certified as a K-6 teacher in New York City, Ms. Howard joined the North Bellmore School District as a teacher. Her tenure there included involvement with the Space and Enrollment Committee and the Shared Decision Making Committee, and roles like mentor of the North Bellmore School District Mentor Program, instructor of the North Bellmore Teacher Center, and member of the Staff Development Committee. Upon her retirement, she obtained positions on the executive board of the North Bellmore Teachers Association and as a retirement representative of the North Bellmore School District. She continues to serve in these capacities today.
One of the highlights of Ms. Howard’s career was receiving a grant to produce a video, “Stranger Danger.” She recorded it with a group of second graders and their parents, and it is still used by her district to this day. She was also proud to author “Windows,” and to accept accolades like the Distinguished Service Award and the Lifetime Award from the North Bellmore Teachers Association. Further, Ms. Howard was honored to be named Educator of the Week by WLNY-55 and the New York State Lottery, and to be inducted as an honorary life member of the New York State Congress of Parents and Teachers. She attributes her success to doing what she loves.
When Ms. Howard wasn’t working, she enjoys putting her knowledge to use in her community. She was a consultant for Learn City in California and for Nassau County Health Center in New York, a trainer for the Growing Healthy Teacher Training Workshop, a talent show coordinator for Park Avenue Elementary School, and a contact person for the Park Avenue Elementary School and Mepham High School Community Service Program. Since 2008, she has maintained her role as the president of the Retired Teachers Association. Ms. Howard is also a certified police and community relations mediator through the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
