As director of strategic initiatives in workforce and human development at the Education Development Center (EDC), she has led efforts to integrate cutting-edge technologies into education and training systems, building models that respond to the demands of both industry and equity-driven educational reform. Her work in developing career clusters for information technology has played a vital role in aligning educational strategies with the shifting landscape of the modern workforce.
Dr. Malyn-Smith’s academic foundation reflects her long-standing commitment to career development, bilingual education and instructional design. She earned a Doctor of Education in career development and bilingual education, preceded by a Master of Education in bilingual bicultural education from Boston State College. Her academic path began with a Bachelor of Science in English education from Universidad Interamericana in San Juan, Puerto Rico. These academic experiences shaped her ability to connect ideas, design inclusive learning strategies and foster collaborative problem-solving, skills that continue to define her approach to educational innovation and systems change.
Before joining EDC, Dr. Malyn-Smith was program director of occupational instructional design for Boston Public Schools, where she was responsible for crafting educational pathways that reflected the diverse needs of students in bilingual and multicultural environments. Her tenure in that role saw the development of comprehensive programs that embraced inclusive pedagogy and vocational training. Her ability to navigate complex educational ecosystems eventually positioned her as a respected national voice in curriculum development, career pathways and the integration of technology in learning.
Dr. Malyn-Smith’s leadership extends across multiple landmark projects. She was instrumental in guiding the Science plus C initiative, which embedded computational thinking and technology competencies into state-level education systems. Her expertise attracted the attention of global leaders, including Google, which consulted her to help define the evolving work of artificial intelligence enhanced software developers. She also organized the Power Uses of Technology project, an international event supported by the United Nations that brought students into immersive experiences such as mock peace negotiations and global policy training.
In addition to her project-based work, Dr. Malyn-Smith plays an active role in thought leadership and advisory networks. She has served as a panelist for the Oak Ridge Association of Universities and holds advisory positions with organizations such as Data Elevates and CareerFirst. Her commitment to social responsibility is reflected in her volunteer work at her local church and with organizations that serve individuals experiencing homelessness. She has received notable recognition, including the Congressional Award for Technology to Empower Communities from Congressman Major Owens.
Dr. Malyn-Smith is also a frequent keynote speaker and author on topics related to artificial intelligence, career readiness and equitable access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. She leads initiatives including STELAR, the STEM Learning and Research Center, and the Real World Design Challenge. Her published work includes titles such as “Developing a Framework for Computational Thinking from Disciplinary Perspective,” which continues to inform research and practice in the field.
