Ellen Winson

Retiring after over four decades in the field, Ellen Marie Macone Winson spent her entire career with the Woburn Public Schools. Joining the school district as an elementary teacher in 1962, she became a reading specialist for grades K-12 from 1966 to 1976 and a remedial reading coordinator from 1968 to 1977. Taking a break in her career in order to raise her children, she returned to the Woburn Public Schools as a Title 1 teacher in 1987, a role she held until 2000, when she became the Title 1 director for the district until her retirement in 2007.

Ms. Winson was also very involved with the Title 1 Dissemination Project in Melrose, Massachusetts, where she served on the board of directors from 1990 to 2005. Other community activities of her include over a decade spent in leadership positions with the Friends of the Woburn Public Library between 2001 and 2012, first as the vice president from 2001 to 2003 and then as president from 2004 to 2012. In order to keep abreast of developments in her field, she maintained professional affiliation with the International Literacy Association and the Council of Administrators of Compensatory Education, where she was the recording secretary from 2003 to 2005.

Embarking on her studies at the University of Massachusetts, Ms. Winson earned a Bachelor of Science and was licensed as an elementary teacher for grades K-8 by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in 1962. She was subsequently certified as a reading specialist for grades K-12 in 1965 and obtained a Master of Education from Northeastern University in 1966. She concluded her formal studies in 1968 upon being certified as a supervisor of reading for grades K-12 by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

For her decades of excellence in the field of education, Ms. Winston was presented with the State Leadership Award by the National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators in 2005. Likewise, she has previously been featured in such professional publications as Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women. In light of all her accomplishments, Ms. Winston has been additionally recognized with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor conferred by Marquis Who’s Who.
