Backed by strong leadership experience and a passion for forestry and construction, Dean Naomi Brown has thrived in the Department of Natural Resources in the state of Alaska. She currently serves the organization as the deputy state forester in the Division of Forestry, as an acting state forester, and as the co-chair of the computer group. In the past, her roles included acting director of agriculture and manager of the Northern Region of the Division of Land and Water Management. Outside of the Department of Natural Resources, Ms. Brown garnered experience as a journeyman carpenter with Enserch Alaska Construction, Inc., a geologist with Placer Dome United States Inc., an office manager with Northwind Aviation, assistant construction engineer and field construction engineer of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System through Fluor Corporation, a geologist with the Amax Coal Company, and a geology lecturer at Indiana University.
Ms. Brown prepared for her endeavors by earning a Bachelor of Science in geology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and by joining prominent groups like the National Association of State Foresters. Her involvement with these types of community organizations has proven invaluable; she really appreciates the opportunity to network with her peers and to always be in the know about developments in her field. At the moment, she remains a designated alternate member of the Governor’s Disaster Policy Cabinet, a designated member of the State Emergency Response Commission of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and a member of the Alaska Wildland Fire Coordinating Group through the AICC-Alaska Fire Service.
Over the years, Ms. Brown has received many accolades for her efforts. She was the recipient of a Certificate of Appreciation from 4-H & Youth Development in 1987, an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Department of Natural Resources in the state of Alaska in 1986, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Anchorage School District in 1983, a Certificate of Achievement from the Susitna Council of Girl Scouts of the United States of America in 1982, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Valdez in Alaska in 1976. Ms. Brown was also honored with a medal from the Department of State Foreign Service Institute, and with inclusion in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who of American Women.
In Ms. Brown’s spare time, she enjoys flying, painting, reading, playing the piano, traveling, gold mining, photography, carpentry, and horse breeding and showing. She is a member of the Alaska Airmen Association, The Ninety-Nines, Inc., and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
