Always having an interest in computers and information technology, Cynthia R.F. Luttrell is a business and systems analyst, IT specialist and app/web developer for the U.S. Census Bureau since 2009. She first began her professional career as a data transcriber at the U.S. Census Bureau’s National Processing Center in Indiana in 1991. She remained in this position for eight years before moving up the ranks to lead peripheral equipment operator from 1999 to 2003, statistical assistant from 2007 to 2008 and IT specialist from 2008 to 2009. In preparation for her career, she pursued a formal education at American InterContinental University in Schaumburg, Illinois, where she attained a Bachelor of Science in information technology in 2008. Ms. Luttrell also served as the executive vice president of AFGE Local 1438 in 2007 and of AFGE Council 241 in 2011.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Luttrell earned the Vision Award in 2016 and received the Bronze Medal Award from the U.S. Census Bureau in 2019. Moving forward, she plans to retire within the next year or two. Instead of “sticking her toes in the sand,” she plans to find a new breakthrough in her career and change directions, although she is currently unsure of the direction. Ms. Luttrell currently has a small farm that she wants to become self-sustainable. She also has a small business idea, where she will be able to give back to the community in a philanthropist business type venture. Likewise, she would like to take care of some things on her bucket list such as traveling.
Ms. Luttrell always had an interest in computers and information technology, starting in high school. At the time, computers were just starting to become popular. To her, it was the way of the future. Her career somewhat followed having kids and a family, so at first, she did not complete her ambitions to study IT. Once her children grew up, she still retained that dream. Ms. Luttrell attributes her success to her persistence, continuing education and her positive attitude. What separates her from others in the field is that she is a forward thinker and likes to see beyond the four walls that she immediately works in. Thus, she is always looking forward, whether it is her physical space or space in time.
Ms. Luttrell would like to be remembered by her peers as someone who set her goals and didn’t stop until she achieved them. In her spare time, she enjoys ballroom dancing, hiking in the woods and doing home improvement projects around the house.
