Since 2005, Ava Hudson Russell, EdD, has excelled as an associate professor at Western Texas College, where she teaches mathematics courses, including college algebra, trigonometry, business mathematics, and calculus. Beyond traditional classroom instruction, she is responsible for dual-credit high school courses and online education platforms. Among her many professional accomplishments, she was the first to develop and teach online math classes at the institution. By 2008, her online classes had grown substantially, and she began working remotely while continuing to visit high school dual-credit programs and overseeing testing centers across Texas.

In solid preparation for her career in education, Dr. Russel studied at South Plains College, where she earned an associate degree in computer programming. Following this achievement, she graduated from The University of Texas Permian Basin with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics in 1997. Continuing her higher education at Texas Tech University, she earned a master’s degree in mathematics education in 1999 and completed a Doctor of Education in higher education administration in 2008.

In recognition of her professional prowess, Dr. Russell has received accolades throughout her career, including the Digging Deeper Award from Western Texas College in 2015. She also has been featured in Marquis Millennium Magazine and was recognized as a Marquis Who’s Who Top Educator. Dr. Russell stays active in her professional community as a member of the Texas Community College Teachers Association and promotes STEM education, particularly for women. Her advice to aspiring educators is to help others become the best they can be, believing that a meaningful legacy is measured by one’s positive impact on others.

Dr. Russell most enjoys spending time with her family. She and her husband manage the Ammaco Orchard, where they grow peanuts and cotton. The name of their farm is derived from the first letters of their children’s names: Amber, Matthew, and Cole. Looking ahead, Dr. Russell plans to retire from full-time teaching someday but intends to continue her involvement in education as an adjunct instructor. She hopes to spend more time with her grandchildren and family while contributing to the academic community through online teaching opportunities. Dr. Russell remains committed to education and knows there is still much more for her to accomplish in her career.
