A prominent figure in the health care industry, Bonnie W. Battey has remained invested in the future of the field for more than six decades.She is primarily focused on topics like Nursing ethics, communication and critical thinking, and is currently preparing a research project on continuing education sponsored by the American Holistic Nurse Association. She hopes to find new ways to integrate spirituality into common hospital practice.
In addition to her present endeavors, Dr. Battey has been a consultant and a private practitioner in Nursing since 1985. She garnered the experience necessary for her work through previous roles as an adjunct professor for the Samuel Merritt University School of Nursing, an adjunct associate professor at George Mason University, and a professor in the Shenandoah University School of Health Professions. Dr. Battey has also served as a nurse with the Pitt County Memorial Hospital, now the Vidant Medical Center, and in various Nursing faculty positions with East Carolina University. Other professional credits include director of graduate studies at the University of North Dakota School of Nursing and chairman of the Department of Nursing at Memphis State University, now the University of Memphis. She was responsible for developing a number of courses, workshops, and seminars for the institutions she was involved with.With such an impressive background, Dr. Battey set out to share her knowledge with her peers outside of academia. She co-authored “Situational Leadership in Nursing” in 1989, which won the American Journal of Nursing and Wolters Kluwer Health Book of the Year award, and authored “Humanism, Nursing, Communication, and Holistic Care: A Position Paper,” which was published by Xlibrus Corp in 2009. She also developed computer-assisted introduction programs and communication research tools, and contributed articles to health and nursing journals and books.
Dr. Battey prepared for her career by earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Wagner College in 1955, a Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University in 1959, and a PhD from the University of Kansas in 1980. She furthered her academic growth by completing postgraduate coursework at the Quantitative Methodology Institute at the National Center for Nursing Research, which is part of the National Institutes of Health. Additionally, Dr. Battey acquired licensure as a registered nurse in Arkansas, Tennessee, New York, Virginia, North Carolina, and California. She kept in touch with developments in her field through affiliation with the American Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau.
As a testament to her years of hard work, dedication and success, Dr. Battey has been featured in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, and Who’s Who in American Nursing, and included in the Trademark Women of Distinction Honors Edition.
